ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Two thirds of Spain's monkeypox infections are concentrated in Madrid and Catalonia
Confirmed monkeypox cases have reached 6,749 in Spain (as of September 7), up 206 in a week, placing the country in the undesirable position at the top of the table in terms of infections in Europe.
And according to the latest report published by the Ministry of Health, two thirds of the cases have been reported in the Madrid region and Catalonia, with 2,366 and 2,018 infections respectively.
Elsewhere in Spain, 814 cases have been detected in Andalusia, 470 in the Valencian Community, 260 in the Canary Islands, 220 in the Basque Country, 193 in the Balearic Islands, 113 in Galicia, 71 in Aragon, 71 in Castilla y León, 56 in Asturias, 56 in Castilla-La Mancha, 54 in the Region of Murcia, 31 in Cantabria, 31 in Extremadura, 19 in Navarre, and six in La Rioja.
In the rest of Europe, (as of September 6), a total of 15,880 confirmed cases have been reported, with Spain at the top of the table, followed by France (3,646), Germany (3,501), the United Kingdom (3,279), the Netherlands (1,166) and Portugal (871).
Most of those infected are young men and cases "continue to be identified mainly in the context of sexual relations or in other situations of continuous or prolonged physical contact of a non-sexual nature," according to a report carried out by the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies.
Meanwhile, data published on Tuesday by the World Health Organisation (WHO), shows that from January 1 to September 5, 52,997 cases of monkeypox had been reported worldwide and there were 18 deaths (two of them in Spain).
The WHO also reported that the number of new cases reported weekly globally decreased by 25.5 per cent in week 35 (August 29-September 4), compared to week 34 (August 22-28).
Closer to home things look slightly different. Four weeks ago, the number of confirmed cases reached 5,162 in Spain (on August 11) although the rate of transmission had slowed down in the first 10 days in August after spiralling at a rate of 15% every three days in July.
However, this earlier upward trajectory appears to have been maintained with more than 1,500 new infections confirmed in the last month.
