ARCHIVED - Orihuela Costa beach bars shut down until Easter
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Orihuela Town Hall is in the process of finalising a new contract with management company Chiringuitos del Sol
As of Monday January 2, beach bars (chiringuitos) in Orihuela Costa have been closed and will remain so until Easter Week.
Chiringuitos del Sol, the company awarded the new management contract following the termination of a previous agreement that was extended on December 31, 2021, posted on social media network that it "regretted the closure for reasons beyond our control".
When the initial contract came to an end, the then councillor for Contracting, Sabina Goretti Galindo (from the PP political party), decided to extend the beach bar service in Orihuela Costa to Chiringuitos del Sol until a new contract was awarded.
The decision, signed by the councillor and the secretary general of the plenary, was promoted by the Popular Party against the wishes of the Ciudadanos political party, who had the responsibility for beaches.
Councillor for Beaches, Antonio Sánchez, explained that the Town Council's legal services have since determined that the contract could not be extended again, so new specifications are currently being finalised with the aim of resuming the service at Easter.
In addition to the beach bars, the contract includes sun loungers, parasols and water sports.
It's expected that the tender will be published in a few days, the bids will be submitted this month, the evaluation will be carried out in February and the award proposal will be ready in March.
The new four-year tender will be similar to the previous one, with a value of around 900,000 euros and the possibility of extending it for an additional two years.
It will include the option of modifying the operating plans to extend or reduce the number of metres according to needs, as well as the length of time beach bars will remain open.
According to Cabo Roig and Lomas Neighbourhood Association, there is "great unease" over the administrative hold-up.
"A year ago the contract was extended at the last minute, at night and with malice aforethought," claims the association, pointing out that the council promised the new contract would be ready before summer 2022.
And they have accused the previous and current government teams of "incapacity to manage Orihuela Costa", insisting the beach service "is highly valued for the food and above all for the toilets".
