ARCHIVED - Solidarity in Murcia: New app for welcoming Ukrainian refugees into your home
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Host families in Murcia, Molina and Cartagena have already registered to take in refugees fleeing the besieged country
An Airbnb-style app for those wanting to offer refuge to Ukrainians fleeing the war-torn country has been launched attracting more than 10,000 hosts in just 72 hours, including dozens in the Region of Murcia.
Ukraine Take Shelter was created by two Americans, Avi Schiffmann and Marco Burstein, both in their early 20s, to make it easier for people who desperately want to help to do so, as has been the case in Murcia, Molina and Cartagena where scores of people have offered to welcome Ukrainian refugees into their homes.
The website is a user-friendly, independent platform where refugees enter their location and instantly receive offers of accommodation in the nearest locations. It is a public bulletin board where hosts are only required to provide information such as their town or city, but can also add additional information such as: age, length of stay, number of people who wish to occupy the house, if they have pets or if they have any medical conditions.
And already individuals and families in Murcia, Molina de Segura and Cartagena have registered. In the municipality of Murcia, there are already five homes that have opened their doors to those in need of accommodation, including two English-speaking hosts, which is said to "make it easier to communicate".
Half a dozen homes are available in Cartagena and Molina de Segura, again with hosts able to converse in English as well as Spainsh.
Meanwhile, an app user in Murcia has offered a residence for 120 people so that "groups who want to stay together during their stay in Spain can do so". The accommodation has 23 rooms and the stay would be long term, according to the website.
Other municipalities in the Region such as San Javier, Jumilla, Lorca, Mazarrón, and San Pedro del Pinatar each have between one and two residences to accommodate refugees.
Contact with accommodation owners can be made via WhatsApp, email or telephone, depending on what the user has entered in their profile.
