ARCHIVED - Spain votes to make it easier for foreigners to find work
The government will approve the new employment rules today to help foreigners in Spain find work more easily
This Tuesday, July 26, the Spanish government plans to approve the reform of the Foreigners’ Regulation (‘Reglamento de Extranjería’) to make it easier for foreigners to be inserted into the labour market.
The reform aims to improve hiring at source, facilitate regularisation of status for those who are already in the country, allow foreign students to work and simplify the requirements to work as an employee.
For people who are already in the country and need their residency status formalised, they must have been in Spain for at least two years and be able to prove that they have worked in Spain for at least six months. If they maintain their commitment to the work they acquire and it lasts for a certain period of time – which is still unknown– they may be granted a residence permit in Spain.
It is not yet known how much this reform will cost, although its entry into force will determine whether or not it will be feasible to fill the job vacancies that are still looking for employees.
Employment in the public sector has grown considerably during the four years that the current socialist governement has been in power in Spain, but some sectors are still looking for employees, and it is possible that this reform will be able to fill those vacancies.
Just last week, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration signed an agreement to make changes to monthly autónomo payments so that self-employed workers and freelancers in Spain are charged less if they don’t earn much and are charged more if they have higher incomes.
