ARCHIVED - Thunderstorms and widespread rain: Alicante weather March 21-24
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
A storm rising from the Gulf of Cadiz will leave torrential rain in Alicante province this week
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts another wet and windy week in Alicante province, with thunderstorms in the north and rainfall across the region on Monday March 21 due to a storm rising from the Gulf of Cádiz.
Around 60 litres of rainfall per square metre is expected to fall in 12 hours in the province and coastal phenomena will see easterly winds cause three-metre-high waves.
Minimum temperatures will rise slightly whilst maximum temperatures will remain unchanged, and winds will be stronger on the coast of the province growing in intensity as the day progresses.
Aemet has provided a province weather breakdown for Monday March 21:
Alcoy
Wet and windy with lows of 9ºC and highs of 12ºC.
Benidorm
Aemet forecasts constant downpours throughout the day, although the clouds may break at points in the morning to let the sun through. However, the coastal resort is likely to experience the highest minimum temperatures of 13ºC reaching 16ºC during brief sunny spells.
Denia
Temperatures will oscillate between 12ºC and 16ºC, with heavy rainfall throughout the day.
Elda
Overcast all day on Monday March 21, with the possibility of showers and temperatures of between 10 and 15ºC.
Orihuela
Here, skies are likely to be completely overcast all day with occasional showers and minimum temperatures of 12ºC rising to 17ºC.
Torrevieja
Totally overcast skies with showers during most of the morning, clearing slightly later in the day, with lows of 13ºC and highs of 16ºC.
Moving into Tuesday March 22, Aemet forecasts cloudy or overcast skies with precipitation. Mountainous areas can expect mist, and fog banks have not been ruled out. There will be little change in terms of temperatures and the easterly wind will be stronger on the coast and less intense in the rest of the province.
There will be no let-up on Wednesday with cloudy or overcast skies and widespread rainfall, more persistent and locally heavy in the northern half of the province, especially in the afternoon. Again, mist is likely in mountainous areas, with potential fog banks. Minimum temperatures will remain unchanged and maximum temperatures are expected to decrease in the southern half with little variation elsewhere. Wind from the east will be occasionally strong on the coast of the northern half of the province in the morning.
It's a similar picture for Thursday; predominantly cloudy or overcast skies with precipitation, more abundant in the northern half where it will be persistent and heavy rainfall is not ruled out. Winds from the east will be stronger along the coast.
