17 nativity scenes in the city of Lorca and outlying villages

The Town Hall of Lorca has once again organized a “Ruta de los Belenes” during the festive season, detailing 17 large nativity scenes which are open to the public.

The Belenes included in the route are the following.

The Belen Monumental Municipal in the Palacio de Guevara, which contains around 300 figures and was opened for Christmas on December 11. Open 11.00 to 13.30 and 17.30 to 20.30 except during the afternoons of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and the morning of New Year’s Day.

The Museo del Belén in the church of San Roque, open December 14 to 24 from 10.30 to 13.30 and December 25 to January 6 both 11.30 to 13.30 and 17.30 to 20.00.

The Living Belén of the Colegio San Francisco de Asís, which can be seen only on December 20 at 17.30 and 19.30 horas, and on December 21 at 10.00, 13.00, 17.30 and 19.30 (entry from Plaza del Negrito).

The nativity scene of the Santuario de la Virgen de las Huertas, open every day 17.00 to 20.00 and on Sundays and public holidays from 9.00 to 12.00 and 18.00 to 20.00.

The Belén of the church of San Diego, open Monday to Saturday 18.00 to 20.00 and on Sundays and public holidays 9.00 to 13.30.

The Belén of the church of Santiago, open 11.30 to 13.10 and 17.30 to 20 horas.

The Belén of the church of San José, open Monday to Saturday 18.30 to 20.30 and on Sundays and public holidays 11.30 to 13.30.

The Belén of the church of Santa María La Mayor and the Medieval Museum of Lorca (CIUFRONT), open December 23 to January 8 from 11.00 to 14.00, closed Christmas Day and January 6.

The Belén of the Hermanas Clarisas in the Monasterio de Santa Ana y Magdalena can be visited by prior arrangement calling 968 477773.

The nativity scene at the headquarters of the Paso Blanco, open 11.00 to 13.00 and 17.00 to 20.00.

The nativity scene at the headquarters of the Paso Azul in the MASS museum, open Monday to Saturday 10.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 19.30, and on Sundays and public holidays 11.00 to 14.00.

The Belén of the Museo Arqueológico de Lorca, open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 19.00, Sundays 10.00 to 14.00 only, closed on December 25 and January 1 and 6.

The Belén of the Asociación de Vecinos de La Viña in the local park, open 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.00 to 20.00.

The nativity scene of the village of Coy, open Sundays and public holidays 11.30 to 13.00.

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue, Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.  

Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the complex of its historic castle.

• Monday to Friday: 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 19.00.
• Saturday: 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 18.30.
• Sunday: 10.00 to 14.00.
