The College of Nurses of Valencia (CEOV) has warned that Valencia is once again the region with the highest number of healthcare workers infected with Covid in Spain.

During the period May 11 to November 25, 15,495 healthcare staff contracted the virus, according to the latest statistics published by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday November 30. In the last 14 days alone, there have been 350 new cases amongst employees at hospitals and health centres, significantly higher than the 248 cases in Catalonia and 199 in Navarra.

In light of the concerning figures, COEV said in a statement it has "begged" the region's Minister for Health, Ana Barceló, to "maximise" prevention measures against Covid infections in clinical settings and reminded that just three months ago, 14,313 health workers had tested positive for coronavirus in the provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellón.

"The current total of 15,495 infected health workers is exorbitant, particularly taking into account that there are other autonomous communities with bigger populations and fewer cases," added the COEV, revealing that in Catalonia, the total stands at 15,440; 13,006 in Andalucía; 9,824 in Castilla y León; and 8,677 in Madrid.

"The most worrying data have been recorded in the last two weeks, and we have stressed the urgent need for greater controls to prevent the transmission of the virus both in hospitals and health centres, recommending professionals maximise hand hygiene measures and continue wearing masks," said the college of nurses.

COEV is also calling for the cancellation of all events, congresses and conferences in which health professionals participate, "presenting an obvious risk of contagion".

The continued rise in new daily cases is not just being felt amongst health workers, a surge in contagion over recent weeks has seen the cumulative incidence rate skyrocket, rising by 298.15% in the last month.

November began with a 14-day cumulative incidence rate of 55.27 cases, a figure which has soared to 220.06 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with health data also showing there are currently 473 hospitalised Covid patients, up 93% since the beginning of November.

Although Valencia president, Ximo Puig, has ruled out mobility restrictions for the moment, a Covid passport will be required to enter certain leisure and hospitality venues from Friday December 3, as well as for visits at hospitals and elderly residential and nursing homes.
