Autumn rains in southern Spain: Andalusia weather forecast September 16-22
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
We are all lucky enough to get some drizzle this week
Andalucía weather forecast, Thursday September 19
There will be plenty of rainy periods in Andalucía this week as we get ready to welcome the start of the autumn season on Sunday September 22.
It has been quite a dry summer in the south of Spain, and some parts of the country have experienced water usage restrictions due to drought this year, so some gentle (not torrential!) rain will be very good for us this week.
The week start of sunny across the whole autonomous community of Andalucía, and it will be mostly sunny on Tuesday September 17 too, with the addition of some more cloud cover. The high-altitude peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Granada could even see some thunderstorms, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

It is on Wednesday 18 when the rain starts to set in, mostly in the eastern half of the region, including Jaén, Granada and Almería, but also some scattered showers in parts of Málaga, Cádiz, Sevilla and Huelva. Aemet also forecasts “light to moderate winds, southerly inland and easterly on the Mediterranean side” and “occasionally strong easterly in the Strait of Gibraltar.”

On Thursday 19, everyone will get more showers, with the only exception being the province of Córdoba, which should remain fairly dry. The rains will not be pouring down and are not expected to cause destructive flooding like some other recent rains we have had, but rather it should be a light sprinkling – just enough to keep the gardeners and farmers happy and to top up the depleted reservoirs a bit.
The rain continues on and off on Friday 20 and Saturday 21, with the western half getting the lion’s share of the soaking on the weekend while the east gets a chance to dry out.

Sunday September 22, when autumn officially begins, is actually forecast to be drier everywhere in Andalucía, if slightly cooler as daytime temperatures drop across the board, but the gentle rains leading up to it are a good portent of things to come for the incoming season.
