Thermometers plummeted to -7ºC overnight in Alicante province and experts warn there are colder nights to come
Winter has made its presence felt in Alicante province over the last few days where chilly winds have been accompanied by a sharp drop in both night-time and daytime temperatures, bringing frost and a reduced snow level of around 500 metres.
And according to meteorologist Lluís Francés, there are colder nights to come. "Sunday night was very cold, and it won't be the last. The central Mediterranean DANA continues to tilt towards the Iberian Peninsula in retrograde progression, bringing cold air vertically which, together with the entry of maritime flows, will generate greater cloudiness and probability of precipitation, as the first episode, with a very low altitude between Monday evening and next Wednesday."
Monday January 23 will get off to a deceptively clear and bright start following a night in which thermometers plummeted to -7ªC in Villena and other towns in the Alto Vinalopó area of Alicante province.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has not ruled out weak and occasional precipitation in coastal and pre-coastal areas in the afternoon, with the snow level below 400m and widespread frost. The mercury isn't expected to surpass 13ºC during the day, and it will feel that bit colder thanks to moderate west and northeasterly winds.
Alcoy: 0ºC to 9ºC
Alicante: 4ºC to 12ºC
Denia: 4ºC to 11ºC
Elche: 3ºC to 13ºC
Orihuela: 2ºC to 12ºC
Tuesday January 24 is shaping up to be a pretty similar day, with frost at night, unchanged highs and skies that will become more cloudy as the hours go by. Showers are likely on the coast and in pre-coastal areas, but they will tend to subside in the afternoon, with a snow level between 400-600 metres, occasionally lower.
Widespread frosts inland and weak frosts in pre-coastal areas can be expected along with light to moderate north-easterly and northerly winds; in the rest of the province, light variable winds will be predominantly northerly in the evening.
Alcoy: -1ºC to 7ºC
Alicante: 3ºC to 13ºC
Denia: 3ºC to 11ºC
Elche: 1ºC to 12ºC
Orihuela: 0ºC to 11ºC
The outlook for Wednesday January 25 is mainly cloudy skies, tending towards cloudy intervals in the afternoon. Weak precipitation is likely in the morning in the north with showers in coastal and pre-coastal areas in the southern half of the province. The snow level rises from 400 metres to 600-700 metres and temperatures will creep up across the board but frost is forecast in inland areas. On the coast, moderate north and north-easterly winds may feel more intense; light to moderate north and north-westerly wind inland.
Alcoy: 1ºC to 10ºC
Alicante: 3ºC to 16ºC
Denia: 6ºC to 14ºC
Elche: 2ºC to 15ºC
Orihuela: 1ºC to 15ºC
The north of the province can expect cloudy skies with light rainfall inland on Thursday morning, January 26, and snow cover between 400 and 600 metres. In the rest of the province, cloud will gather momentum as the day progresses. Temperatures will fall slightly once again with frost inland.
Wind from the west and northwest will be light to moderate, tending towards light westerly inland and northerly on the coast in the afternoon.
