ARCHIVED - Benidorm launches resort-wide tree planting initiative to improve the local environment
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Some 200 trees will be planted in almost all neighbourhoods throughout the Costa Blanca coastal town
In the latest attempt to improve Benidorm's urban image and reduce its carbon footprint, the Town Hall has embarked on a tree-planting program and plans to introduce 200 new specimens in 30 different neighbourhoods.
The new trees will absorb around 10 tons of CO2 per year, with increased absorption as they grow.
Planting has already begun and will continue over the coming weeks. The first grove of 55 mulberry trees were planted along the CV-753, dubbed the "tourist highway" of the Costa Blanca, on Monday January 23. The following day, a further 31 specimens of the Tipuanas and Jacarandas varieties were transferred from Séquia Mare park to the same area.
The next phase of the environmental project will see deciduous trees planted in Calle Virgen del Rocío next Monday and Tuesday, where a "copse of different varieties" will be created, including Melias Azedarach and Tipuanas de sombra.
After inspecting the first CV-753 phase, Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez, said: "All these plantations create biodiversity in the town's green fabric, favouring the absorption of CO2, and are a great opportunity to offset the carbon footprint.
"Each tree is capable of absorbing around 25 kilos of carbon dioxide per year, an amount that increases as the trees grow, so these new trees will absorb at least 10 tons of CO2 from our atmosphere every year".
Once Calle Virgen del Rocío is completed, Bismarkia' or blue palm tree specimens will be introduced in Calle Ricardo Bayona, at the junction of Calle Nicaragua and Calle Cuba and Foietes Park and Rincón de Loix.
Next month will see the turn of the following streets/avenues: Callosa d'En Sarrià, Sella, Lepanto, Atocha, Denia, 9 d'Octubre, Ermita de Sanz, Sèquia Mare Park, Marina Alta, Avenida Andalucía, Inglaterra, Berna, Roma, Severo Ochoa, Italia, Palau d'Esports, Calle París, Gambo, Garita, Apolo XI and Ramos Carratala streets.
New palm trees will also be planted in Calle Colón and Bilbao, the CV-70 car park and the Salt de l'Aigüa parks.
"Plantations are being carried out in urban areas and in the city's parks so that, in addition to contributing to clean air quality, they improve the overall image."
Other measures introduced in Benidorm to reduce CO2 emissions in recent years include the renovation of lighting with LED technology, the introduction of hybrid vehicles into the municipal fleet, pedestrianisation of streets, creation of park-and-ride car parks and the promotion of the use of public transport.
