The town hall plans to attract more mature tourists to the Marina Baixa resort with healthy outdoor off-season activities and events
In a bid to attract low season visitors and position itself as a leading competitor in the senior tourism market, Benidorm Town Hall plans to create a 'Care Lab' focusing on healthy ageing.
Senior tourism is "booming at the moment", according to Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez, who revealed the plans to capitalise on the possibilities the growth of this particular market offers holiday destinations at Madrid's Fitfur tourism fair this week.
The creation of the 'Care Lab', part of the 'Benidorm Vision 360' tourism project is eligible for European Union Next Generation funds, and will focus on healthy outdoor activities and events aimed at more mature visitors in low season.
"Studies in the field of tourism intelligence have detected an opportunity which offers possibilities during spring, autumn and winter, and as such, the Care Lab will concentrate on a healthy programme for pensioners during these low and mid-season periods".
Recent studies corroborate an increase in the number of senior tourists interested in physical and mental well-being who are keen to stay active and maintain healthy lifestyle habits during their holidays.
And Benidorm is determined to be one of those chosen destinations.
"Benidorm has a privileged climate to offer outdoor activities throughout the year, as well as the public spaces. We are not just talking about our beaches, but also about green recreational areas and natural parks," said Perez.
Environmental improvements are already being carried out at l'Aigüera, Foietes Séquia Mare, Serra Gelada and El Moralet Natural Park in preparation.
In addition, Benidorm offers more than 100 kilometres of cycle lanes, cycle paths and pedestrian areas.
"All these municipal spaces, added to the privately-owned ones, the active tourism companies, the accommodation offers oriented towards health and well-being, and the sports centres, mean that Benidorm can really focus on this new trend of healthy tourism by offering a specific product.
"Benidorm is known nationally and internationally for selling happiness, and happiness is closely linked to health, both physical and mental, and that is precisely what we want to promote," added the mayor.
