Blustery and damp start to March: Spain weather forecast Feb 29-Mar 3
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The rain will hit most regions of Spain over the weekend but the temperatures will remain pleasant
Weather alerts on Saturday March 2
March is a notoriously unpredictable month weather-wise but for the moment, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects the beginning of spring to be much wetter than the previous couple of months, particularly in western Spain and the Balearic Islands. Storms may also hit the country more often.
On the other hand, temperatures are predicted to be slightly warmer than usual over the next few days, especially along the Mediterranean coast.
Thursday February 29
A front from the northwest will bring more clouds to central and northern parts of the country, with rain in the northwest at first, which will spread to other areas in the afternoon. There might be some scattered rain in other parts of the interior, but not in the southwest or Mediterranean regions, where it will be mostly sunny.
Daytime temperatures will start to climb in the east and the Balearic Islands.
Due to strong west and northesterly gusts, several regions including Andalucia and the Valencian Community have been issued with a yellow weather alert later in the day.
Friday March 1
Several Atlantic fronts will affect the weather on Friday. The first will bring cloudy skies and possible showers to the Pyrenees, Catalonia and Balearic Islands, with potential thunderstorms in coastal areas.
The second front will enter the northwest, causing increasing cloudiness and rain in Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia.
Temperatures will generally decrease, except in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea where they will stay the same.
Strong westerly winds are expected, with powerful gusts in certain areas.
Saturday March 2
The lingering Atlantic front will leave cloudy or overcast skies and showers in its wake in much of Spain on Saturday. The rain will be heaviest in the extreme north and any showers in the Mediterranean area and Andalucia will be light and scattered.
Daytime temperatures will increase again in most of the south but the night will be much cooler in Murcia and the northwest of Spain.
The winds will be particularly strong in coastal areas and more yellow and orange alerts have been issued. Affected areas include Andalucia, Catalonia and Galicia.
Sunday March 3
Rain is expected throughout Spain on Sunday, although it should be fairly light in the southeast. Nighttime temperatures will climb by a couple of degrees in the far south of the country but the day will be cooler overall.
The winds will again be intense in most of the country, but there are currently no weather warnings in place.
