British cruise ship slammed for midnight fireworks display in Malaga port

Malaga residents were outraged at the beginning of this month when they were abruptly woken from their sleep at midnight by a booming fireworks display over the port. The pyrotechnics were launched by the owners of British cruise liner Marella Voyager to celebrate the ship’s maiden voyage, whose very first stop took her to the Andalucia dock.

Despite the fact that the display was announced the previous day by the Port Authority, the lights and noise took many locals by surprise, dozens of whom complained on social media since they were so rudely disturbed late on a work night. Still more were angered about the impact the fireworks had on their pets and young children.

To add insult to injury, this is actually the second similar episode planned for the Port of Malaga in less than a week. This coming Saturday (June 10) it will be turn of the Scenic Eclipse II, self-proclaimed as “one of the world’s most luxurious ships”, to celebrate its inauguration in Andalucia with another pyrotechnics show.

Adding a sense of occasion, NASA astronaut Kathy Sullivan will ‘christen’ the vessel.

Before the arrival of the Marella Voyager, the same British shipping company christened two other passenger liners in the iconic marina.

“The port is important to them. These events consolidate the Port of Malaga. Marella has regular stops here and made very important bases in the past,” explained Carlos Rubio, president of the Malaga Port Authority.

So loud were the fireworks last Thursday that they could be heard all over the city, and even as far as Torremolinos and Alhaurín de la Torre.

Not everyone was put out though, and many said they welcome these kinds of unique celebrations that make Malaga one of the top places in the Mediterranean for cruise tourism.

However, due to the many differing opinions, the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, has taken to social media to acknowledge the “discomfort and complaints about noise”. He explained that he doesn’t hold the City Council responsible but will instead address the matter with the Port Authority.
