Brexit appears to have done nothing to discourage British tourists from flocking to the Region of Murcia, with travellers from the UK accounting for more than a third of the foreigners who holidayed in the Region between January and July – a record period in terms of tourism.

And according to data from the Frontur Survey carried out by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and managed by the Regional Ministry of the Presidency and Tourism, the first seven months of 2022 also marked a "record period" after two years conditioned by the pandemic, with a 351.4% increase in foreign tourism.

This upturn places the Region as the third autonomous community with the highest increase in overseas visitors. In addition, the average length of stay was 12.7 days, much longer than the national average of 7.5 days.

The upward trend continued into July which saw a 2.5-fold increase in the number of visitors over the previous year. And last month, the Region welcomed 124,000 foreign tourists, explained the Regional Minister of the Presidency and Tourism, Marcos Ortuño, "with demand at levels already approaching those of the last few years before the pandemic".

He added that "the British continue to be loyal visitors to the Region, despite the fact that after Brexit they have ceased to receive the treatment they had as citizens of a Member State of the European Union and now have the same consideration as other foreigners from third countries".

In the first seven months of the year, the UK accounted for 34.2% of foreign tourism. Of the almost 478,625 visitors to the Region, 163,868 were British – double the number of French tourists (78,579 representing 16.4%). They were followed by 37,855 travellers from Nordic countries (7.9% of the total), and Germany with 32,926 visitors (6.9%).

"The Region has broken all-time highs and has achieved historic records this summer," said Ortuño, adding: "The hotel establishments, campsites and tourist flats have never received so many visitors, both national and foreign, as they did in July."

And the surge proved highly beneficial for Covera airport with 60% of all visitors arriving in the Region by plane.
