Paseo Cabo Roig in Orihuela has once again been recognised with a Blue Trail distinction in the 2022 round of awards by the Association of Environmental Education and Consumer (ADEAC).

The distinction recognises pathways that link, cross or access beaches, ports and harbours, and the purpose of the Blue Trail awards is to promote the connection of Blue Flag sites through trails that "enhance the value of natural areas with cultural and heritage interest".

Delighted the path has once again received the coveted award, the Town Hall said it validates the efforts made to "transform this space into a valuable resource for environmental interpretation, the enjoyment of nature and the realisation of sports and outdoor leisure activities".

Paseo Cabo Roig runs for 2.5km parallel to the coastline and includes five viewpoints for the public to enjoy the "high geological interest of the cliffs and beaches", as well as "attractions of high heritage value", such as the Torre de Cabo Roig, a military watchtower type building from the 16th Century listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Locals and visitors can also take in the stunning marine landscape from Cabo Roig to La Manga del Mar Menor and Isla Grosa, with views of the "shadows in the water of the Posidonia Oceanica meadows", which form authentic underwater forests that serve as shelter and food for aquatic species.

"It is worth mentioning the abundant existence of the protected shrub known as Jarilla Cabeza de Gato, and with regards to the fauna, the existence of species of red-tailed lizard, common bee-eater, common shrike, yellow-legged gull, black-headed gull, common tern, plover, stonechat, sandpipers and great cormorant, among others," said the local authority, adding that there are plans to "improve this space further for the greater enjoyment of residents and visitors."

Orihuela's beaches and coves boast 11 Blue Flags, placing it amongst the top three municipalities in Spain.
