ARCHIVED - Camposol and Mazarron Country Club included in expansion of campaign to recycle used cooking oil
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Mazarrón has gone from having 8 oil recycling containers to 42, which are already installed in different parts of the municipality
Mazarrón Town Hall’s Department of the Environment has increased the number of containers available for recycling used cooking oil, installing dedicated recycling bins in Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón, Camposol and the Mazarrón Country Club.
This project for the separate collection of used cooking oil is financed by the National Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITERD), within the circular economy program and the plan to promote the environment - PIMA Residues 2021, is carried out in collaboration with the National Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies.
All you have to do to recycle the oil is pour it into an empty plastic bottle, close it, and drop it in one of the large orange receptacle.
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, accompanied by the Councillor for the Environment, Plácida Gómez, attended the completion of the installations of these containers.
The Councillor for the Environment, Plácida Gómez explained, “Forty-two containers have been installed at different points in the municipality between Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón, Camposol, Mazarrón Country Club and districts. In the month of March there will be a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of recycling the oil we use so that it does not reach our seas, as part of the campaign funnels will be distributed to adapt to plastic bottles so that it is easier to pour the oil and be able to deposit it in the containers.”
For his part, the Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, commented, “In conjunction with this Department of the Environment campaign, Mazarrón Town Council will try to raise awareness of the sustainability that all citizens must practice. There will be 42 containers in total that will be installed throughout the municipal area, Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón and Camposol, as well as some districts with a higher population. This campaign is carried out through a grant that the Town Council requested to be able to increase the number of containers from the seven or eight that we already had to the 42 that we have today, providing the opportunity to seek greater sustainability with our environment.”
Why you should recycle used cooking oil
- One litre of cooking oil will contaminate 40,000 litres of water, which is the approximate equivalent to the water consumption of one person for a year. Pouring this waste oil down the sink is the main cause of urban water pollution.
- A citizen consumes around 20 litres of edible oil per year, of which between 10% and 20% is discarded.
- Treatment of used cooking oil generates high costs in water treatment plants
- After the oil is poured into the recycling container the bottles are also recycled, avoiding the generation of new waste.
- Recycling this residue produces biodiesel. A renewable energy that does not run out and is kind to the environment.
As well as recycling containers being installed in Mazarrón Town and the Puerto de Mazarrón, additional loctions can be found in Camposol, Cañada de Gallego, Cañadas de Romero and Mazarrón Country Club.
“Recycle your cooking oil. Don’t throw away a drop.”
