ARCHIVED - Camposol gardening contract, Mazarron Mayor meets gardening groups
Mazarrón Mayor Gaspar Miras meets gardening groups to explain the new municipal gardening contract and discuss other issues
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras accompanied by Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol, Silvana Buxton met with the heads of the four Camposol gardening groups to discuss the new municipal gardening contract and other items of concern around the urbanisation.
Representing the four gardening groups were Elaine Wick, President of Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group (Sector A), Colin Barton, President of B Clean Gardening Group (Sector B), John Osbourne, President of Green Fingers (Sector C) and Pat Ridler President of Camposol D Gardening and Community (Sector D).
The Mayor opened the meeting by thanking all the groups for the hard work and effort they had put in over many years to keep the urbanisation looking good and maintaining the public green areas, he went on to say that the Council had, within the last few days, signed the new municipal gardening contract which included the Camposol development.
There was a discussion about what services and areas would be included in the contract so the gardening groups could concentrate their endeavours and finances on the remaining areas. Councillor for Camposol Silvana Buxton said she had been in contact with the manager responsible at the contracted company and would be organising a meeting with him and the gardening groups so a division of labour plan could be laid out.
This was well received by the gardening groups who commented that the new contract would help tremendously by relieving some of the workload and expense and allowing the groups to focus on the areas not covered by the contract. The fact that the new contract covers the pruning of palm trees would alleviate considerable expense with B Clean alone having spent 1,500 euros on pruning in the last year.
The Mayor added that the new contractor should be starting work on Camposol within the next few weeks.
Among other items discussed were the frequency (or infrequency) of the collection of the garden waste from the skips around the urbanisation. The Camposol Councillor replied that she had already contacted the works manager at Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería who control the municipal waste collection and a new, more frequent roster was being devised. The Mayor also mentioned that a fenced-off refuse and recycling collection point was being planned in Sector C.
Another possibly more important problem was raised by the president of Green Fingers, who pointed out his concerns about the bank of the rambla (riverbed) between sectors B & C which was being eroded along the west side and nearing the road between the bridge and dual carriageway.
The Mayor confirmed that the council was aware of the problem and that the land was owned and controlled by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), the National Government Agency for rivers and waterways. He continued that in the last few months technicians from the CHS and Mazarrón Council had been drawing up drainage plans to be integrated into the proposed contract for the asphalting of Avenida de los Covachos, the project for the drafting of which had recently been awarded.
Expanding on the situation, he pointed out that in the longer term the CHS, Mazarrón Council and Regional Government (CARM) were in talks regarding the construction of a new bridge linking the dual carriageways on Sectors B and C which would eliminate the problems caused by the eroding riverbank.
