Cartagena goes electric: 250 new e-bikes hit the streets for clean, connected travel
Pilot scheme launches citywide bike-sharing at 19 stations, with app-based booking and easy access for all
Electric bikes have finally arrived in Cartagena, kicking off a fresh era of technology and sustainability for city travel.Residents and visitors can pick up and return bikes at designated parking points:
- Plaza Puertas de San José (opposite the Tourist Office)
- Alameda San Antón (next to Plaza María Cristina)
- Paseo Alfonso XIII (opposite the Youth Councillor's building)
- Pescadería Street (opposite UPCT)
- Severo Ochoa Square (intersection with Ángel Bruna Street)
- Doctor Fleming Street (opposite the Polytechnic University)
- Municipal Sports Palace (opposite Rambla Shopping Center and West Park and Ride)
- Park and Ride area in the City Centre (opposite Mandarache Shopping Centre)
- Rose Park
- Avda. del Puerto (opposite Santa Lucía Health Center, Plaza de Molina)
- Ingeniero de La Cierva Street (opposite the UNED)
- Campos Street (opposite the San Miguel building)
- Avenida Po XII, Barrio Concepción (Ctra. Algameca)
- Cartagonova Stadium
- Juan Fernández Street (Los Juncos Park)
- Opposite UCAM
- King's Square
- Bazán Apprentices Square (opposite ISEN)
- Concepción Neighborhood Area, Algameca Space
Everything is managed through a simple mobile app available for Android and iOS. The app lets you book, unlock and pay for your ride, plus check the rules or report any problems there and then.
There’s a €20 deposit to get started, and all bikes must be picked up and dropped off at an official location. Safety features include lights, bells, brakes and geolocation, plus a smart speed limit of 25 km/h and at least eight hours of battery life. The new e-bikes are strictly for city use, so no rides on pavements, pedestrian zones, intercity roads or tunnels.
This project forms part of Cartagena’s wider Sustainable and Accessible Urban Mobility Plan and its commitment to cut emissions, improve quality of life and create a more bike-friendly city. If all goes well, this initial two-year scheme with a possible extension could see e-bikes running right through to 2029.
Expect to see more cyclists zipping through Cartagena in the coming months - just another sign of a city moving forward and getting cleaner, greener and more connected.
