Celebrate Christmas Day in La Zenia with the biggest beach party in Europe
Thousands of people flock to the Orihuela Costa’s Cala Bosque each year for a Christmas Day with a real difference
Are you tired of the same old Christmas celebrations? Looking for a unique and exciting way to spend the holiday season? Look no further than the beautiful Cala Bosque beach in La Zenia, onto which thousands of revellers descend every December 25 to enjoy a Christmas Day beach party like no other.
With its golden sandy shores, crystal clear waters, and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, it is hard to imagine a more idyllic location. The beach is surrounded by towering palm trees, providing ample shade for visitors to relax and enjoy the festivities.
The tradition began more than a decade ago when a group of adventurous expats decided to trade in the winter blues for the sandy beaches of the Orihuela Costa. The event has continued to grow over the years and is now the largest beach party in all of Europe.
Last year, beachgoers sizzled in 20ºC temperatures and many brave souls dusted off the swimsuits and ventured into the sea. It’s not going to be quite as toasty this Christmas but the weather still promises to be bright and sunny.
This cherished custom brings together more than 100 different nationalities with British visitors and residents being the obvious stand-out. From early morning to late into the night, the sandy shore is awash with red as the community comes together to celebrate the day.
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a feast, and barbecues are normally the order of the day. Most people also bring along tables and chairs, and there’s even the odd beer fridge run by a generator!
Sadly, the beach bars in Orihuela Costa remain closed so attendees will need to bring their own supplies, and the bathroom situation could be a little tricky since the toilets were removed at the end of the summer. However, the beautiful cliff-top La Mirada restaurant will be open on the day.
Santa Claus himself will kick off the celebrations at 11am, leading a Cuban-style Charanga from La Zenia down to the beach. This will be followed by a Christmas concert with live music from DACAPO.
It’s worth remembering that finding parking will be next to impossible on the big day as the police often close off the street to traffic, so be prepared for a five minute walk down to Cala Bosque.
So if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable way to spend Christmas Day, head to La Zenia. With its stunning setting, lively entertainment, and delicious food and drink, it's the perfect place to escape the cold and gloom of winter. So pack your sunscreen, grab your swimsuit, and get ready to celebrate Christmas in the sun!
