ARCHIVED - Changeable weather divides Spain in two this weekend: forecast March 30-April 2
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Temperatures will plummet in the north of Spain while the south remains dry, sunny and warm
Most of Spain experienced record high temperatures earlier this week but a drastic change is forecast as we head into the weekend and a new storm approaches from the Atlantic. The weather will pretty much divide the country in half over the next few days, with the thermometers plummeting in the north while remaining decidedly summery in the south of Spain.
The storm will sweep in across Galicia on Thursday March 30, bringing plenty of rain and overcast skies here and along the Cantabrian coast. There will certainly be cloudy intervals in the rest of Spain, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), but the Mediterranean will enjoy plenty of sunny spells and with high temperatures of 30-32ºC in the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia and Andalucía.
On Friday March 31 the winds will change to a westerly direction, mean temperatures in the north plummet further still. However, once this breeze crosses the country and arrives in the Mediterranean it will have heated up and become very dry, so the gusts will bring a worrying increase in the risk of forest fires in the south.
Pretty much all of the Canary Islands will be clouded in Saharan dust, although this is unlikely to move to the mainland, where the day will be largely clear, if a little overcast in places. The mercury will continue to rise in the south, both during the day and at night, reaching a scorching 34ºC in Murcia.
Throughout the weekend but beginning on Saturday April 1, the "temperatures will drop throughout Spain, including the Mediterranean, and the thermometers will have more normal values for these dates, even somewhat cool in the northern half, where on Sunday there will be night frosts," an Aemet spokesperson has predicted. Incredibly, the temperature in the extreme south of Spain could fall by as much as 10ºC between Friday and Saturday.
The humid winds may bring some light rain to the north and east of the country, as well as the Balearic Islands, and while the south is expected to remain dry, it will become increasingly cloudy as the day moves on.
Looking ahead to Sunday April 2 and the rain will increase in northern Spain, without ruling out some stormy spells towards the afternoon. The rest of the country should remain mostly clear with some high clouds but the ‘calima’ will dissipate in the Canary Islands.
The maximum temperatures will tend to drop in the eastern half of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, even as they begin to rise in the extreme south-west. Night-time temperatures will continue to drop in a general way, with weak frosts in the mountainous systems of central and northern Spain, more intense in the Pyrenees.
