74% of tourist accommodation has already been booked ahead of the summer season in Spain
The tourism sector was undoubtedly one of those hardest hit by the pandemic but the recovery of the industry is well underway, and with travel restrictions to Spain mostly lifted and the summer just around the corner, 74% of holiday rentals are already booked up.
Finding a rental property in Spain for the upcoming high-season is becoming quite a mission and with the increased demand comes inflated prices: the cost of holiday lets across the country has increased by an average of 28% since 2020, with coastal areas attracting the most tourists.
However, compared to hotels, holiday apartments and houses continue to be one of the cheapest travel alternatives for Spaniards and foreign tourists alike.
Prices by region in Spain
On average, a holiday rental in Spain costs around 180 euros, according to search engine Holidu, and the most expensive region to book at the moment is the Balearic Islands, at 300 euros, followed by Catalonia at 207 per night.
A room in Andalucía still costs considerably less (177 euros) while a vacation in the Valencian Community will set you back 176 euros.
A holiday home in Madrid costs about 150 euros and in Asturias, tourists will pay 147 euros for a night.
One of the cheapest spots is the ever-popular Canary Islands, at 117 euros, while rental properties naturally vary throughout the other regions: a stay in Murciacosts around 139 euros on average, Aragon and Galicia are both priced at 136 euros while the cost drops to 131 in Navarra and Castilla La Mancha.
The cost of the coast
With temperatures on the up and up, more travellers are opting for coastal destinations than city breaks. This summer, the Basque Coast is the most expensive option at 439 euros while the best value can again be found in the Canary Islands.
The second cheapest seaside getaway is the Costa de Almeria, at just 138 euros per night, followed by the Costa de Galicia (140 euros), Costa Cálida (145 euros) and in fifth place the Costa Verde (155 euros per night), according to Holidu.
The Islands are followed by the Costa Tropical, Costa de la Luz and Costa de Valencia, all with 84% occupancy; the next position is occupied by the Costa Brava with 83%, followed by the Costa Blanca with 82% and Costa Verde, which has already reached 80% of total occupancy for the upcoming season.
