ARCHIVED - Christmas in Alicante: festive markets, nativities and an ice skating rink
Alicante City Council has put together a bumper programme of festivities for all the family
Alicante city was dealt a blow this week when its giant Christmas bauble – the largest in Spain – went up in flames. But this has done nothing to dampen the Christmas spirit in the city with the council launching an exciting programme of festivities for all the family.
The eagerly-awaited annual outdoor ice-rink opened in the Bullring's Patio de Sol today (Friday December 9) along with an amusement fair, guaranteed to keep youngsters entertained for hours.
And there is so much more to see and do in Alicante this holiday season. Attractions include:
World's Largest Nativity Scene (pictured)
Located on the Explanada de España, the scene's figures measure between 10 and 18 metres in height and, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the nativity is the largest in the world.
In addition, six giant eight-metre tall angels are also dotted around the city. Here's where you can find them:
- The Bullring's Patio del sol.
- Renfe train station.
- Central promenade of Avenida Federico Soto.
- Central promenade of Avenida Doctor Gadea.
- The intersection between the Explanada and Puerta del Mar,
- Calle Teulada and Avenida Jaime I roundabout.
Town Hall Nativity Scene
This nativity is situated at the Town Hall entrance and is open to the public until January 6 from 10am to 1pm every day, plus Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 5pm to 8pm. However, it will be closed on December 25 and January 1 as they are public holidays.
This year's slogan is 'Nativity Scene in the heart of Alicante' and is the work of Antonio Alonso and Vicente Ramírez, members of the Alicante Nativity Scene Association.
The nativity scene represents the maritime façade of Alicante in 1850 and features more than 50 original figures created by Murcian artist Nicolás Almansa, who died last March. In the foreground is the customs house, which is currently the headquarters of the Municipal Tourist Board, as well as the Malecón promenade, the current Esplanade. In the scene of the Birth of Jesus, the municipal market can also be seen, although in those days, it was located in the area now known as Puerta del Mar.
Plaza de la Montañeta Nativity
Eight nativity scene masters have collaborated in the creation of this scene, with contributions by sculptor Juanjo Sevilla.
Christmas craft market and fair
Lovers of Christmas craft markets will definitely want to head to Paseo de Federico Soto where dozens of stall will be open until January 8 from 10am to 3pm and from 5pm to 11pm. Between December 20 and 24, the open-air Cascaruja and Porrate fairs will be open, selling traditional nuts, fruits and sweets.
Séneca Square activities for the kids
Fun attractions will take place until the January 8. The opening hours are Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 3pm and from 4pm to 10pm. There will also be craft workshops, from December 26 to 30.
Alicante Trade Fair
