Cloudy with scattered showers and highs of 35 degrees this weekend: Alicante weather June 8-11

An extremely dry spring has given way to downpours over the last 20 days in Alicante province, accumulating 96% of the season's total rainfall. And according to meteorological experts, the province will face more frequent rainstorms between periods of drought over the coming months as a direct result of climate change.

The first eight months of the 2022-2023 hydrological year were particularly dry in the Valencian Community, with an accumulated rainfall of 306.4 l/m2 since October 1, which is 20% less than the climatic reference average (381.9 l/m2).

However, the province of Alicante has gone from the two driest months of March and April on record, to the wettest May since 1950.

"In recent years, slower and more undulating atmospheric circulations have been occurring, which means that when a particular meteorological phenomenon occurs, such as heat, rain, drought or cold, it lasts longer and is more extreme," explains José Ángel Núñez Mora, head of the region's Climatology section of Aeme.

"Although globally the spring has been normal, there has been a great spatial and temporal difference. Locally, there has been a great difference between provinces: while in Alicante the spring has been wet, with a 35% rainfall surplus, in Castellón the spring has been dry, with a deficit of 37%, and in Valencia it has been very dry, with a deficit of 35%," he added.

And for the next few days at least, Alicante province can expect more rain, although not on the scale of recent weeks, accompanied by a welcome rise in thermometers.

Cloudy intervals are likely for the most part of Thursday June 8 with a low probability of scattered showers. The mercury will begin to rise, accompanied by an easterly wind.

Alcoy: 14ºC to 26ºC

Alicante: 18ºC to 26ºC

Denia: 16ºC to 26ºC

Elche: 16ºC to 27ºC

Orihuela: 16ºC to 29ºC

Again, much of Friday June 9 will see intervals of cloud and occasional showers in the north. Temperatures will continue on an upward trajectory, and a westerly wind inland with sea breezes on the coast is forecast.

Alcoy: 16ºC to 27ºC

Alicante: 19ºC to 29ºC

Denia: 18ºC to 29ºC

Elche: 17ºC to 31ºC

Orihuela: 18ºC to 31ºC

High cloud on Saturday morning, June 10, will gather momentum from midday onwards. The north of the province can expect scattered showers in the afternoon and temperatures will creep up to highs of 35ºC in the Vega Baja region. A light variable wind with sea breezes in likely from early afternoon.

Alcoy: 16ºC to 29ºC

Alicante: 21ºC to 31ºC

Denia: 21ºC to 29ºC

Elche: 20ºC to 34ºC

Orihuela: 21ºC to 35ºC
