Cold and blustery weekend ahead: Spain weather forecast Jan 18-21

Weather warnings on Friday January 19

The interaction of storms Hipólito and Irene have resulted in rollercoaster weather this week, with sky-high temperatures in much of southern Spain and torrential rain and raging wind in parts.

But big changes are afoot as a new storm is expected to sweep across the country on Thursday afternoon moving rapidly towards the east, and leaving plenty of rainfall, gusts and choppy waves in its wake.

The forecast is far from certain, however, as it largely depends on where two different fronts cross paths: one, a cold air mass from the north and another warmer and more humid front from the south.

Thursday January 18

Strong southwesterly winds from dawn have placed several provinces on yellow alert on Thursday but these gusts should ease off towards the evening. The day will be mostly overcast with heavy rain forecast in the north, although this isn’t expected to spread to the Mediterranean coast.

Temperatures will drop in northern Spain with few changes expected elsewhere.

Yellow weather alert for strong winds: Andalucia, Aragón, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Galicia, Region of Murcia, Basque Country, La Rioja, Valencian Community.

Yellow weather alert for heavy rain: Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura.

Friday January 19

The anticipated Atlantic storm will cross from west to east, leaving abundant cloudiness and widespread rainfall and storms in most places, but once again the extreme southeast and the Balearic Islands should avoid the worst of the weather.

Both day and night-time temperatures will drop sharply in much of the country, especially in the north, giving rise to frosts towards the end of the day.

Yellow weather alert for strong winds: Andalucia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Galicia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community.

Yellow weather alert for heavy rain: Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura.

Yellow weather alert for low temperatures and/or snowfall: Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, La Rioja.

Saturday January 20

While things are still a little uncertain, the Atlantic storm is expected to pass away from Spain on Saturday, with high pressures gaining ground. Cloudy skies will predominate with a chance of showers in the entire country, particularly later in the evening.

Daytime temperatures should increase in the far north and drop in the rest of the country. Night-time temperatures, on the other hand, will decrease across the board, resulting in widespread frosts inland and in the southeast.

Yellow weather alert for strong gusts and rough seas: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Valencian Community.

Yellow weather alert for low temperatures: Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, La Rioja.

Sunday January 21

High pressures are expected in much of the country with slightly cloudy skies throughout. Weak rainfall is also a possibility in mountainous areas but this is unlikely to reach the south of Spain or the Balearic Islands.

Daytime temperatures will continue to fall in the extreme southeast but they should climb by a couple of degrees everywhere else.

No weather warnings have yet been issued for Sunday.
