Cold, wet weekend ahead: Spain weather forecast May 18-21

The arrival of a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) in the southwest of the country will bring rain and storms over the next few days, according to meteorologists, who expect the unstable weather to continue in Spain through the weekend and well into next week.

"From Thursday to Monday, the largest masses are expected at points in the Bay of Biscay, the Balearic Islands and also in the southeast of the peninsula. In those areas they could register between 40-60 mm (of rain)," reports Eltiempo.

Despite the heavy rain forecast in most of the country over the next few days, experts believe this will be insufficient to alleviate the drought that has affected much of the south.

The DANA began to descend on the country on Wednesday and by Thursday May 18, the cold air mass will have covered a large part of the country and will give rise to a situation “of great instability, which will result in showers that may be accompanied by storms and with the possibility of hail for the next few days.”

Thursday will be mostly cloudy in all of Spain with daytime temperatures falling slightly across the board, while the night will be much cooler in the south.

Several provinces, such as Valencia, Alicante, Mallorca, Menorca, Girona, Ibiza and Formentera have been issued with yellow (low-risk) weather warnings for heavy rain and rough seas.

On Friday May 19 the rains will intensify across the Cantabrian Sea and the stormy showers will continue in the south of Spain, mainly affecting large parts of Andalucía and the Region of Murcia. The DANA will also result in a strong storm in the north of the Balearic Islands and the northeast of Catalonia.

At some point in the afternoon, these showers could result in mud rain.

There will be very few bright spells on a mostly overcast day when the temperatures will take another dip with the exception of the northeast and the south of Andalucía, Ceuta and Melilla, where they could creep up a notch.

The Balearic Islands and Catalonia are on alert for adverse sea conditions while a yellow warning for storms remains in place in the Valencian Community.

Meteorologists expect more cloudy skies in northern Spain on Saturday May 20, but the strength of the storms should begin to ease off in Galicia and the Cantabrian area. It will be another overcast day in the eastern Mediterranean with showers affecting northern Catalonia and the Balearic Islands in particular.

The clouds will gather strength towards the afternoon in Andalucía, Murcia and the south of the Valencian Community where scattered and sometimes stormy showers are forecast.

Daytime temperatures will rise in the north but drop elsewhere, barely tipping the low 20s in much of southern Spain.

The Balearic Islands remains on yellow alert for choppy seas.

Few changes are expected on Sunday May 21 and the instability is likely to continue with clouds gathering across the country as the hours go by. DANAs are always unpredictable so there’s a bit of uncertainty about Sunday’s forecast, but at the moment showers are likely in the south of Spain and inland Valencia.

Rainfall is also expected in the north, central Spain and in the Balearic Islands.

Temperatures will rise in the northern half of the country and the Balearic Islands, and will drop in the southwest. Few changes are expected elsewhere.

There are currently no weather warnings in place for Sunday.
