ARCHIVED - Controversial new Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante claims homosexuality is an illness
The radical views of the new head of the diocese in Alicante and the Vega Baja proceed him, fuelled by his own media profile
The Bishop of San Sebastián, José Ignacio Munilla, has been appointed to head the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante from February 12, having been appointed by Pope Francis on Tuesday, bringing with him a multitude of controversial homophobic and anti-feminist beliefs and opinions fuelled by his own very active media profile, website and radio programme.
His arrival in San Sebastian in 2010 led to a number of confrontations with the clergy, politicians and various social groups, particularly after he claimed homosexuality is a "disorder" that can be cured with therapies, on a ETB1 TV programme that same year, professing to have helped "heal" at least three gay people.
"They have seen very clearly that their homosexuality is a consequence of the wounds suffered in their childhood within the family", argued the priest, who has 70,000 followers on Twitter.
When questioned, Munilla defended his outlandish beliefs by countering: "Do you think it is politically correct to operate on a person to change their sex and do you think it is politically incorrect to carry out therapy to correctly orientate their sexual tendency?"
He even went so far as to argue that, "many times one becomes a homosexual because, on the basis of a brutal way of having sought out certain acts, this has ended up making him homosexual. Sometimes it is not the thief who does the stealing, but the stealing that makes the thief".
During a public speech in 2018, the bishop revealed his second "theory to homosexuality", pointing to "inadequate experience of personal configuration during puberty".
"We have reached a consensus of understanding that homosexuality is not a question of hormones or things like that, but above all an illness, a neurosis that has been formed by inadequate relationships in puberty with the family environment," he said, blaming "stormy relationships" with fathers and "overprotective " mothers.
But it's not just sexuality the controversial new head of the diocese is extremely vocal about.
Munilla, who co-wrote a book called "Sex with Soul and Body" which describes masturbation as "violence against the body", also believes divorce is "immoral" because a child has "the right to have a father and a mother". He also considers any process related to IVF to be immoral, and unsurprisingly, adoption by same sex couples.
In one of his sermons, the priest asked his flock to ask themselves: "Have I uncritically accepted the postulates of the so-called 'gender ideology', homosexualism or radical feminism?"
He also went so far as to assert that "few people dare to say that the pension system is not sustainable if the birth rate is not reactivated", and for this "it is necessary to protect the dignity of women in their maternity", concluding that "gender feminism is the suicide of female dignity itself".

And using his Twitter account as a tool to reach tens of thousands, Orihuela-Alicante's new bishop recently went from equating refugees with terrorists to talking about abortion as a "female holocaust" and suggesting that society live in a dictatorship.
