The Murcia airport will launch promotional campaigns to secure more flights from Europe
After registering disappointing passenger numbers at the end of 2022, the International Airport of the Region of Murcia in Corvera has turned its attention to the UK, France and Italy. To encourage airlines from Europe to operate more routes with the Region, expansive promotional campaigns will be launched before the summer season kicks off.
Closer to home, the Ministry of Tourism has set its sights on achieving connections with Madrid and Barcelona, while separate drives will be aimed at airports in Galicia, Asturias, Santander, the Basque Country, Cantabria, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
Speaking at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), Murcia’s regional president, Fernando López Miras, said that this “extraordinary action to promote tourism” will require resources at Corvera airport to be increased tenfold to meet the expected demand.
Currently, five different airlines operate from Corvera servicing ten destinations in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Morocco and the Canary Islands. Now, with an investment of 210 million euros and the creation of 24,000 new jobs, a record investment in tourism, the president has set the goal of “becoming a Mediterranean power in terms of tourism”.
Although the airport failed to reach pre-pandemic levels last year, that’s no reflection on the tourism industry in the Region of Murcia as a whole, which broke several records in 2022 and was one of only seven communities to welcome more visitors than in 2019. Holidaymakers, particularly the British, also spent more time and money in Murcia than ever before.
Of the total investment in the sector, four million euros has been earmarked for the campaigns aimed at boosting the number of flight routes with Europe.
The advertising will highlight the Region’s “explosion of flavours and nature” and market Murcia as “diverse and inclusive, steeped in history and innovation, and very generous”.
