ARCHIVED - Costa Blanca councilman resigns over sexist comments on Facebook

The Benitatxell councillor made offensive comments on the Ayuntamiento’s own Facebook page
The councilman of the RED group in the City Council of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, Alicante province, has submitted his resignation on Tuesday March 7 because of some comments on Facebook that the City Council has described as “sexist, disrespectful and out of tone”.
The local government has reported the case to the Department of Equality and the Women’s Institute of the Ministry of Equality, among others, in this, International Women’s Month.
On the council’s own Facebook page, councilman Manuel Segarra made a comment saying, “I just bought a 9kg Whirlpool-brand washing machine!!!! No problem, if you bring your clothes to my house I’ll wash it for you!!!! So you can continue working for the City Council and not waste time on work for fools or women.”
After submitting his resignation letter, Segarra asked for forgiveness: “After the totally unfortunate comments written by me last Friday night on the Facebook of the City Council of Poble Nou de Benitachell of which I am a Councillor, I feel the need to ask my sincere apologies to all women and people who may feel offended by them.
“In no way do I share what I wrote in that mistaken comment on Facebook, as I consider myself a normal person who shares the housework with my wife, as it should be, something that I pass on to my children.
“Therefore, and given all the commotion caused, I have thought it appropriate to resign from my position as Councillor of the City Council of Poble Nou de Benitatxell in which when I had government functions I always defended the equality of women and men.
“I am human and I make mistakes, I cannot go back and rectify but I can reiterate my sincere apologies!!!!
“But above all I want to say sorry, sorry, sorry to my wife, my children and my whole family, who have nothing to do with this situation.”
For its part, the City Council of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell had condemned the attitude of the councilman with a statement also on the social network, which explains that the councilman himself tried to delete his comments: “These totally reprehensible and sexist behaviors have no place today in our society, much less by a political representative.”
