The Valencia region has already recorded its wettest March since 1950 as torrential downpours continue to pelt Alicante province and the rest of the community.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the region has experienced an average rainfall of 185.7 l/m2 so far this month, whilst certain areas in the north of Alicante province recorded levels in excess of 500 l/m2.

These levels of rainfall were last recorded in September 2009, but the month isn't over, and with wind and rain set to continue, Aemet predicts March 2022 will become the wettest month in the region on record outside the autumn period.

Over the last three weeks there have been several waves of widespread rain, the heaviest of which fell on March 4 affecting the Vega Baja and Vinalopó regions of Alicante province in particular. The north of Alicante and south of Valencia felt the brunt of downpours on the 16 and 19, although the rain was pretty much widespread.

The province of Castellón appears to have escaped the worst of the persistent lashing, being further to the north, but the same can't be said for Alicante and Valencia where 10% of the region exceeded 300 l/m2 of rainfall.

This compares to an average of 95.6 lires in the Castellón town of Morella, for example.

So how are things shaping up for the rest of the week in the Valencia region?

Wednesday March 23

An orange alert for rain continues, with localised downpours forecast and strong esterly winds along the region's coast. Minimum temperatures of 13ºC with highs of 16ºC in Alicante province.

Thursday March 24

Again, the alert remains in place for widespread precipitation, but this time the rain will be locally persistent in Castellón and northern Valencia, and may subside in Alicante during the afternoon. Temperatures will rise slightly with highs of 18ºC, and the winds will be light easterly to moderate, becoming north-easterly on the coast as the day progresses.

Friday March 25

The outlook is cloudy or overcast with the chance of haze in high areas of the southern half of the region. Widespread rain will be more persistent in Castellón and Valencia and temperatures are unlikely to change. Moderate easterly wind is forecast across the region, with strong northeasterly winds on the coast.
