Costs of all-inclusive travel packages to Spain soar

Package holidays to popular Mediterranean destinations, including Spain, have soared in price compared with last year amid the deepening cost of living crisis and high demand.

Week-long deals to Spain’s hotspots, including the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, have gone through the roof, costing travellers an average of 12% more, according to price comparison site, TravelSupermarket.

When compared to pre-pandemic 2019, the average price across the top five Mediterranean destinations of Spain, Greece, Turkey, Portugal and Cyprus has shot up by more than 30%, well above the rate of inflation.

However, Spain is one of the top summer destinations hit the hardest by the price hikes, with sunseekers jetting off to Mallorca, for example, forking out 21% more than last year.

The data, first reported by the BBC, shows that the average price for a family of four package deal in Spain in August has leapt from 941 euros in 2022 to 1,079 euros.

According to travel experts, demand from travellers currently outweighs supply, while soaring inflation, food prices and higher bills for fuel and wages are also driving the rise.

Inflation in the UK has stuck steadfast at 8.7% since April, higher than in the EU where it fell from 8.15% in May to 7.1%.

TravelSupermarket’s chief executive, Richard Singer, said: “After a number of disrupted years of travel there is no escaping that demand for holidays is high as people look to book their much-deserved holiday. This, coupled with global inflationary pressure, has seen a rise in holiday prices to some locations.”

And travellers are advised that hanging on for a last minute deal may not be the best strategy due mainly to the high demand.

“Prices for next year are looking on a par with this year. However, there are still some great holiday bargains out there, especially if you can be flexible on date of travel, duration or potentially trying a new destination,” added Singer.

TravelSupermarket’s head of investment Victoria Scholar said more and more families have been opting for all-inclusive trips as a cheaper way to travel abroad amid the cost of living crisis. But “the lower price advantage that they are often known for offering appears to be diminishing”.

The only positive to be taken from the data is car hire, which according to the website, has fallen in price.
