ARCHIVED - Covid vaccination in Murcia gathers momentum but is still progressing more slowly than elsewhere in Spain
15.3 per cent of the population of the Region have received at least one Covid vaccine dose

In spite of another 16,000 coronavirus vaccine doses having been administered in Murcia over the weekend, the Region is still lagging behind the rest of the country in some aspects of the immunization campaign, with only 18.8 per cent of the population aged over 16 having received their first doses as opposed to 23.5 per cent in the whole of Spain.
This equates to 15.3 per cent of the entire population of Murcia, and 19.9 per cent in Spain as a whole, although the gap is much narrower in the percentages having received both doses (6.7 per cent and 7.2 per cent).
This proportion is the lowest reported in any of Spain’s 17 regions, and Murcia is also propping up the table in terms of the proportion of doses administered. The 82.9 per cent of vials received which have been injected into patients is well behind the 93.8 per cent nationwide, and in only one other Autonomous Community (Cantabria, with 83.2 per cent) is the figure below 90 per cent.
According to the latest Ministry of Health update, published on Monday, 232,472 people in Murcia have received at least one dose of the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccine, with 102,077 having also received the second jab. Those vaccinated include 98.1 per cent of the over-80s, but in other age groups the Region of Murcia has so far made less progress than is the case elsewhere in the country: for example, the 36.4 per cent of 70- to 79-year-olds to have received at least one dose represent higher proportions than those reported in Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha, but the figure is far lower than the 43.9 per cent across the whole country or the proportions of over 50 per cent in Galicia, Extremadura, Asturias and Andalucía.
Murcia has also been the slowest in terms of starting on the vaccination of those in their 60s (24.5 per cent so far), although in younger age groups the Region is much closer to the national average (11.8 per cent for those in their 50s), 10.6 per cent for 25- to 49-year-olds, 5.9 per cent for 18 to 24s and 0.3 per cent for those aged 16 and 17.
With 31,000 more doses of the Pfizer vaccine expected to arrive in Murcia this week and another 11,000 of AstraZeneca, the aim is to administer a further 70,000 doses during the week, again prioritizing the elderly and those considered to be at special risk from Covid-19.
However, there continue to be reports of hiccups in the immunization process, recent instances including one in Mula where over 500 people were notified of their vaccination appointments but a lack of doses meant that only 60 could actually receive the jab. A similar incident is reported in the Murcia district of San Andrés de Murcia on Monday, when various over-80s made the trip to the local health centre only to be turned away again as there were insufficient stocks of the Pfizer vaccine.
In Mula it has been confirmed that those who could not be vaccinated at the weekend will instead receive their doses on Wednesday 21st April.
Another problem encountered has been the inefficiency of notifying people of their appointments by SMS text message, either because they don’t receive the messages or because they treat them with scepticism, and this has resulted in thousands of people being offered a second chance at the Palacio de los Deportes in the city of Murcia this week. On this occasion they are being informed by means of telephone calls, and it is hoped that in this way the relatively high opt-out rate at the first time of asking can be rectified.
The health authorities will be notifying all those with appointments by phone from now on in an attempt to minimise the numbers not turning up to for their vaccines.
This week there are several major vaccination points in operation, focusing on the 70-79 year-old age group with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and the 60-69-year old group with AstraZeneca.
The authorities continue to reiterate that the public should ensure that their relevant health centre has correct contact details.
