Police captured the violent fugitive in Altea in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province
A dangerous Polish drug kingpin who gunned down a rival and was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Poland has been arrested in the coastal resort of Altea, 10km from Benidorm.
The 55-year-old drug trafficker, who had been hiding out at a luxury villa, was under surveillance by the Guardia Civil for several weeks before being captured in a nightclub after the Polish authorities alerted them to his possible presence on the Costa Blanca.
According to police sources, the fugitive was the ring leader of a drug trafficking network in Poland, where he is linked to the shooting of a rival gang leader, and has extensive criminal contacts in Europe.
He reportedly trafficked ecstasy in the Netherlands, stole vehicles in Germany and imported large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Spain.
"The detainee also has connections to groups in Russia and Belarus who bought stolen luxury vehicles from him in Europe. After his escape from Poland to Altea, where he had several compatriots who protected him, he intended to establish a network of marijuana trafficking to Poland, something that has been prevented in coordination with the Special Division of Drug Trafficking and Organised Crime of the Police of Poland (CBSP)," added the Guardia Civil.
A European arrest warrant was issued in June and after surveillance at a number of properties, investigators located the violent criminal at a luxury villa on an isolated urbanisation in Altea.
However, sources added that the fugitive hardly ever left the house and was "protected by several trusted compatriots with whom he intended to set up an operation to export marijuana to Poland".
So officers sat in wait for him to leave the property and on July 8, the 55-year-old finally left his hide out and headed to a nightclub in Altea where he was planning to meet friends before two police teams pounced and arrested him.
A court in Benidorm remanded him in prison and he will be extradited to serve his 25-year sentence in Poland.
