With five Grammies to her name she has been awarded the highest honour bestowed on jazz artists in the USA

One of the great names of Jazz returned to the San Javier Jazz Festival 2023 on Saturday evening, as Dianne Reeves, honoured as a “Jazz Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2018, the highest honour granted in the United States to its jazz greats, performed to an appreciative audience.

It wasn’t as imposing as the White House when she performed for President Barack Obama or alongside the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra , Chicago Symphony Orchestra or even the Walt Disney Concert Hall (where she was the first ever vocalist to perform) but she was welcomed back enthusiastically for her fourth concert in San Javier and delivered exactly what the audience had come to see; a spectacular set which showcased her astonishing vocal range and ability to improvise.

Now, with her 68th birthday approaching, she welcomed protégé Song Yi Jeon to the stage at the festival, gifting her extraordinary experience and knowledge to this talented young artist, whom she is mentoring as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative which has been connecting extraordinary young artists with internationally acclaimed mentors across a spectrum of artistic disciplines for decades.

Sharing not only her remarkable skill but also offering such a public endorsement of an emerging talent a generous gift which few are ever given the opportunity to see and enjoy.
