ARCHIVED - Drastic drop in temperatures this week: Spain forecast August 15-18

Aemet predicts a notable drop in the mercury in most of Spain before the temperatures ramp up once more next weekend
A DANA sweeping in across the northwest of Spain brought storms and showers to many areas of the country over the weekend, along with a drastic drop in temperatures in places on Sunday August 14. However, the change hasn’t impacted all regions equally, and a stifling wind blowing from inland Spain has pushed the mercury up even further in parts of Malaga, Alicante, Murcia and Almeria, where the thermometers are still hanging around the high 30s.
On the opposite end of the scale are Madrid, Toledo, Badajoz and Cáceres, where night-time temperatures are expected to drop by 8 or even 10ºC later in the week.
The Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community remain on yellow level alert for heat on Monday August 15 while the Balearic Islands and Catalonia have been issued with a rain warning. In general though the temperatures should take a dip compared to the weekend, although the thermometers could still reach 35ºC in the southeast.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday
Alicante: 24ºC minimum; 35ºC maximum
Almeria: 24ºC; 33ºC
Malaga: 25ºC; 35ºC
Murcia: 23ºC; 38ºC
Showers and storms are forecast for a large part of the northeast on Tuesday August 16 where Catalonia and Aragon are under a yellow warning for rain. The temperatures will continue to drop under the influence of an Atlantic front which will bring high and medium clouds to much of the country.
The mercury will continue to exceed 35ºC in the peninsular southeast and the southern half of the Valencian Community.
Winds from the west and south will predominate in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, with intervals of strong westerly gusts in the Strait and on the southeast coast.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Tuesday
Alicante: 21ºC minimum; 32ºC maximum
Almeria: 22ºC; 31ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 34ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 37ºC
Wednesday August 17 will be the wettest day of the week in the north of the country, although Catalonia is the only region with a current weather alert. There will be little change to the temperatures for the most part with the exception of the Canary Islands and the eastern coast, where a notable drop is expected.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday
Alicante: 21ºC minimum; 33ºC maximum
Almeria: 22ºC; 31ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 32ºC
Murcia: 23ºC; 37ºC
Much the same for Thursday August 18, with the rains of the previous day likely to be repeated in Cantabria and around the Pyrenees, spreading to the north of the Balearic Islands early in the day.
There are currently no weather alerts in place for Thursday.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Thursday
Alicante: 22ºC minimum; 31ºC maximum
Almeria: 21ºC; 30ºC
Malaga: 23ºC; 31ºC
Murcia: 23ºC; 34ºC
In general then the temperatures are expected to be far more comfortable this coming week with Aemet predicting a short period of “thermal relief” before the mercury jumps back up again next weekend. However, meteorologists assure that Spain is unlikely to return to the extreme heat of recent weeks.
