Dull but warm this weekend: Spain weather forecast May 16-19
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
There’s a chance of showers in most of Spain over the weekend but the temperatures will remain mild
Weather outlook on Saturday May 18
A bank of cool, humid air will sweep across Spain towards the end of the week, sending temperatures plummeting and bringing widespread rain to the north of the country. The extreme south should, as usual, miss the brunt of the bad weather but there will be long periods of overcast skies here too over the weekend, and the chance that the rain could spread further south hasn’t been ruled out either.
From Thursday May 16, the arrival of this new front will result in lots of showers and some heavy downpours in the north, according to the State Meteorological Agency. The Valencian Community in particular, and the southeast of Spain in general, will be the exception and the mercury should still climb to 28 or 30ºC in the city of Valencia and Murcia.
It will be much cooler along the west coast though where Thursday is predicted to be the chilliest day of the week.
On Friday May 17, a gentle but continuous temperature rise will begin which should gradually bring thermometers back up to normal values for the middle of May. The morning will be very overcast in most areas, and the cloudy skies will persist into the afternoon throughout southern Spain, with the exception of the southeast.
The showers should be confined to the north of the country and the northern coast of the Canary Islands.
This instability will continue as we head into the weekend, with a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies accompanied by rain forecast in much of the north and east on Saturday May 18.
Daytime temperatures will dip slightly on the Mediterranean and Cantabrian coasts but the mercury should rise noticeably in the southern half of the Atlantic. The reverse will happen at night, when the minimum temperatures will drop on the Atlantic slope but increase in the east.
Very few changes are expected on Sunday May 19. The cloud cover will increase as the hours go by in most of the country, and abundant rain is predicted in the north, east and central Spain.
Daytime temperatures should climb again in western Spain but the mercury will fall in the Mediterranean area. Sunday night will be much warmer in practically the entire country except for the eastern Mediterranean coast.
The good news is that this unstable weather will be short lived, and the experts expect the temperatures to shoot up during the last full week of May. Rainfall towards the end of the month is also likely to be well below average in the southeast, on the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands.
