Easter Week got underway in Benidorm on Palm Sunday ahead of a week of processions, following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, and the much-anticipated arrival of holidaymakers.

 

Thousands of people celebrated the traditional Palm Sunday blessing of the palms and olive branches at the Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana which was followed by a procession of palms through the nearby streets and Holy Mass.

 

And this week, the Costa Blanca's toursit capital will host several brotherhood processions and float parades, religious festivites which traditionally attract visitors from across Alicante province who line the streets.

 

 

Holy Wednesday April 13, 10pm: The Procession of the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno will depart from the Parish Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana and make its way through the town centre streets, including calles Alameda, Ruzafa, Tomas Ortuño and Almendros.

 

Maundy Thursday April 14, 9pm: The Procession of Silence will take place jointly between the Sacramental Brotherhood of the Holy Supper and the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Forgiveness. The procession will leave the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Almudena and move along calles Ginés Cartagena, Capitán Cortés, Paseo de la Castellana, Velázquez, Acacias, Goya, Jardines, and Ginés Cartagena, ending at the church located in the Foietes-Colonia Madrid neighbourhood. At the same time, the Solemn Procession of the Brotherhood of the Prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane will depart from the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista.

 

Good Friday April 15, 7am: The Stations of the Cross procession will set off from the Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana led by the Brotherhoods Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, making its way towards Mount Calvario.

 

Good Friday April 15, 8.30pm: The Procession of the Holy Burial of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows will depart from the Parish Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana. The rest of Benidorm's other brotherhoods and sisterhoods will also take part in this procession which will pass through Plaza San Jaime square, calles Major, Alameda, Los Ángeles, Pintor Lozano, Martínez Alejos, and Paseo de la Carretera, ending at Plaza San Jaime.

 

Good Friday April 15, 11pm: The Penitential Way of the Cross will start at the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista and will arrive at the Chapel of the Virgen del Mar at the top of the Tossal de la Cala.

 

Easter Sunday April 17, 8am: The Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows will celebrate the meeting of the Lord and the Holy Virgin in Avenida Alameda.
