ARCHIVED - Extreme heat alerts launched across Spain: weather forecast June 13-16
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The heatwave in Spain is expected to last well into the middle of this week
Spain’s first heatwave of the year, the earliest recorded since 1981, began in earnest on Sunday June 12 with temperatures as high as 42ºC recorded in the south and along the Mediterranean coast. And with general stability and strong sunshine, coupled with the entry of a very warm air mass from North Africa, Aemet predicts the scorching temperatures will last well into the coming week.
According to Aemet, the heatwave "will continue, at least, until Thursday the 16th, without ruling out that it lasts a few more days." Little respite is expected once the sun goes down either, as most areas of Spain are in for a few tropical nights this week, with minimum temperatures ranging between 20ºC and 25ºC.
Monday June 13
The mercury will continue to rise in the north and southeast of Spain throughout Monday, as well as in the Balearic Islands, with more significant increases in Cantabria and the upper Ebro.
Temperatures will actually dip a little in the southwest, the northeast and the Canary Islands compared to the blistering highs seen on Sunday.
Alicante and Malaga remain much the same, with a high of 30ºC forecast, while the mercury will reach a staggering 38ºC in Murcia.
Weather alerts on Monday:
Andalucía has been issued with an orange warning for temperatures up to 43ºC in the provinces of Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Jaen and Seville, while a yellow heat warning has been issued in Huelva.
Likewise, Aragón, Madrid, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha continue under an orange alert for heat.
In the communities of La Rioja, the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia, Navarra, Catalonia and Castilla y León, a yellow alert is in place due to temperatures that will reach 36ºC
Tuesday June 14
Very little change expected on Tuesday, which will dawn cloudy before giving way to clear skies and the chance of suspended dust in the south.
Most of the southern half of the country is expected to hover around 35ºC while the mercury could reach 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys.
Weather alerts on Tuesday:
Andalucía, Aragón, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid are on orange alert for high temperaturas
The Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Galicia, the Region of Murcia, Navarra, The Basque Country, La Rioja and Valencia are all under a yellow warning.
Wednesday June 15
On Wednesday, the rise in temperatures will likely continue in the north of Spain while a slight decrease will be felt in the southwest. The night-time temperatures will also remain high, ranging between 20 and 25ºC in large areas of the south and central Spain. Weather warnings are the same as on Tuesday
Thursday June 16
Come Thursday, “it is possible” that temperatures could drop significantly in the western part of the country, while the mercury remains very high in the east.
Storms are expected in the northern half of the country, particularly in the afternoon, which could be accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind.
