First high-impact storm of the season hits: Spain weather forecast Oct 19-22
Storm Aline will bring heavy rain, gale-force winds and a risk of flooding to every corner of Spain
Weather alerts for Thursday October 19
The “first high-impact storm” of the season, dubbed Aline, is set to hit mainland Spain in the next few hours, hot on the heels of storm Babet which brought widespread rain and falling temperatures earlier in the week. With this new weather front, every corner of the country will be hit with torrential downpours and gusts of wind at some point.
Its passage will be rapid – it will only be in Spain this Thursday and part of Friday – but its effects will cause an "adverse" day throughout the country according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which has also warned that it will be "small, but strong."
Aline is expected to produce gusts of winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, rain levels of between 60 and 70 litres in the period of 12 hours, dangerously high waves and the first snowfall of autumn in some parts of northern Spain.
At the moment, Andalucia, central Spain and the northwest are expected to bear the brunt.
Over the next few days, the temperatures are also likely to plummet, with the maximums barely hitting 20ºC in several regions.
Thursday October 19
As storm Babet moves away to the north it will cross the path of incoming storm Aline, which will sweep the country from the west, creating a day of cloudy and overcast skies. Widespread, heavy rain accompanied by storms is expected to develop throughout the day in all of Spain as the weather front moves from west to east.
The most persistent rainfall is forecast in southern and northwest Spain, and falling temperatures will result in snowfall in the Pyrenees.
In this regard, both day and nighttime temperatures will drop across the board and sharply, and it will feel even colder thanks to intense winds from the west and south, which will be much stronger in coastal areas.
Orange alert for storms/heavy rain/gusts: Andalucia, Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community.
Yellow alert for storms/heavy rain/gusts: Cantabria, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra, La Rioja, Ceuta.
Friday October 20
As the storms begin to pass, a cold flow from the west and northwest will ensure the weather on Friday will continue to be unstable with mostly cloudy skies and lingering rainfall. The worst of the rain will hit Galicia, Cantabria and the Pyrenees and the showers should become lighter further south, with little chance of storms in the extreme southwest or southeast.
For the most part, the stormy weather should subside throughout the day, opening up clearings in western Spain in the late afternoon.
Temperatures will continue to fall everywhere but the Canary Islands and intense westerly winds will predominate, especially strong along the coast.
Orange alert for storms/heavy rain/gusts: Andalucia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia, Basque Country.
Yellow alert for storms/heavy rain/gusts: Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Region of Murcia, La Rioja, Valencian Community, Ceuta.
Saturday October 21
Things will have settled down considerably by Saturday morning and most of the rainfall will be confined to northern Spain, although isolated showers are still a possibility inland and in the southeast. The skies will clear briefly in the afternoon but the approach of a new low pressure centre will bring increased cloud cover from the southwest later on.
The winds will also begin to die down but the temperatures will continue to fall in the entire country, hovering around the 20ºC in most places.
Yellow alert for rough seas: Andalucia and Catalonia.
Sunday October 22
Two weather fronts will make their approach on Sunday but their path is still very uncertain. However, the current forecasts predict more overcast skies and abundant rain, particularly in Andalucia and much of the southwest.
Daytime temperatures will finally begin to recover, increasing into the low to mid 20s, while the night will be much warmer in the south.
