First major storm of the season hits Spain: Weather forecast Sept 26-29
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Storm Aitor will bring widespread rain, dangerous sea currents and chilly temperatures to much of Spain this weekend
Weather alerts on Thursday
Storm Aitor, the first major impact storm of the autumn season, is currently winging its way towards Spain. Over the next few hours, a very active front will enter the north of the country, which will bear the brunt, before spreading west towards the weekend.
While the worst of the stormy episodes and the heaviest of the rain will hit Galicia and the Cantabrian coast, by Thursday the rain will probably reach parts of Andalucía, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, where the strong winds will also churn up the seas.
Thursday September 26
Storm Aitor should be confined to northern Spain on Thursday but the rain will almost certainly spread, albeit in a weaker and more scattered way, to the south-east of the country. The showers won’t reach the Mediterranean, but even here the skies will be largely overcast or cloudy.
Towards the end of the day the rain will subside, only to be replaced with a second front.
Temperatures will fall in the northwest of Spain and rise in the southeastern half of the country and in the archipelagos.
Yellow alerts for storms/gusts/rough seas: Andalucía, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra, La Rioja.
Friday September 27
The front associated with Aitor will begin to move away on Friday, leaving cloudy skies everywhere in its wake and scattered rain in large areas of Andalucía and the Strait.
A general and sharp drop in temperatures is expected, except in the Canary Islands and in areas of the southern Mediterranean, where there won’t be many changes.
The weather will start to settle down on Saturday and while no rain is forecast for the most part, the day will still be very cloudy. There’s a chance of the odd scattered, light shower in the Balearic Islands.
Daytime temperatures will continue to fall in the east while increasing a little in the west, but nowhere will the mercury top 30ºC.
Yellow weather warning for rough seas: Balearic Islands, Catalonia.
Sunday September 29
The stability will continue across Spain and in the Balearic Islands, with partly cloudy skies and no heavy rain forecast. However, yet another front could sweep the north, where cloudy skies and some showers are a possibility.
Temperatures will begin to climb in most places, although few changes are expected along the Mediterranean coast.
All of the weather alerts have been lifted for Sunday.
