ARCHIVED - Four in five Elche motorists clocked speeding by mobile radars
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
1,500 drivers have been penalised so far this year for driving at excessive speeds in the Baix Vinalopo town in Alicante province
Elche Police has revealed shocking figures which show that 80% of vehicles that passed through mobile speed controls in both the town centre and in rural roads during a recent road traffic campaign were speeding.
Mobile checks were stepped up to twice a week at the beginning of the year, and Avenida Adolfo Suárez and Camino de Perleta a Balsares have been identified as "hot spots" for speeding offences.
During just 20 speed controls, 4,600 vehicles passed by the radars and astonishingly, 3,693 exceeded the speed limit, with 1,491 motorists being fined or losing points from their driving licence.
According to Elche Local Police, focus has been placed on the road from Perleta to Balsares, which has sections limited to 50 kmh, where Road Safety Unit officers were deployed following public concern about cars driving far too fast.
.
Here, of 862 vehicles checked, 657 were travelling at "well over the speed limit". Officers set up the mobile radar on three consecutive days recently and found that on the first day there were 88% infringements; on the second, 78% and on the third, 63%.
"This demonstrates that this type of action is necessary," said Road Safety Officer, José Sánchez, adding: "Traffic on roads such as this one, which connects the city centre with the districts or with the coast, has increased with the arrival of summer and this increases the demand from residents for greater police vigilance to try to dissuade those who drive too fast and can cause traffic accidents."
A similar problem occurs in Camino Viejo de Santa Pola, which has become a nippy alternative to the roundabouts on the CV-865 to get to and from the coastal town.
"In one of the last controls carried out by the Local Police on this two-way road, 128 vehicles were checked in just 40 minutes, of which 115 exceeded the 40 kilometres per hour limit in this predominantly residential area," said Elche Police.
Also of concern is Avenida Adolfo Suárez, close to the Vinalopó Hospital where the public has also called for speed controls. This road, with two lanes in each direction, has a speed limit of 30 kmh, but 96% of vehicles that passed through a recent radar were "committing an offence".
"Despite the fact that the road is well signposted and has several pedestrian crossings, drivers have been detected reaching 105 kilometres per hour, while the average speed was 57 kilometres per hour," warned the Road Safety Unit which has apparently "voluntarily" decided to leave between 10 and 20 kilometres of margin for error before denouncing any driver who exceeds the limits. This explains why only 40% of offenders are fined.
