Free parking in Murcia City on weekends and peak days over Christmas
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Murcia’s trams and buses will also be completely free of charge during key dates of the festive season
The Atocha, Loaysa, Justicia, Fuenteblanca, Condomina and Arrixaca public car parks in Murcia will all be free on peak days during the festive season and on weekends throughout the Christmas period. This is just one of the measures implemented by Murcia Council to encourage shoppers into the city this year, and public transport will also be entirely free between December 1 and January 7.
According to the Council's calculations, between trams, buses and municipal bicycles, 120,000 people will use public transport in Murcia every day while it remains complimentary.
Crucially, the free parking spaces will be applied to the city’s park and ride facilities, which should greatly reduce congestion in the urban centre during some of the busiest shopping days of the year.
Between the six car parks, drivers will be offered a total of 1,058 free spaces on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, as well as the last three weekends in December (15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30). Free parking will also be offered on the opening day of the Glorieta Christmas Market (Thursday December 7) and the big Christmas tree lights switch-on on Saturday the 9th.
Specifically, 197 complimentary spots will be open in Loaysa parking lot, 212 in Atocha, 104 in Fuenteblanca, 345 in Arrixaca, and the Condomina and Justicia will have 100 each.
All of the public car parks are conveniently located close to the free tram and bus lines that run into the city centre.
Since massive crowds are expected to flood the streets of Murcia during the last three weekends of the year, the City Council has also extended the tram and bus services until 1am.
Likewise, all taxis, regardless of the kinds of licences they hold, will be allowed to pick up customers during the last three Fridays and Saturdays of December, as well as the 7th, 9th, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and January 5th.
Finally, the Department of Mobility has indicated that certain traffic restrictions will be applied on December 7, 9 and 24 and on January 5, but these will be clearly signposted and drivers will be informed well in advance.
