ARCHIVED - Guided tours and exhibitions in Alicante
Alicante Provincial Council is promoting an array of cultural activities including tours of museums and archaeological sites
Guided visits to museums and archaeological sites and exhibitions across Alicante province are being promoted by the council's cultural department, offering a fantastic opportunity to explore historic sites and find out more about Alicante's history.
MARQ Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante
The museum (pictured above) features rooms dedicated to Pre-history, Roman Culture, the Iberians, the Middle Ages and Modern and Contemporary Culture, as well as the themed rooms such as 'Excavating a church', 'Excavating underwater' and 'Excavating in a cave'. Visitors can also enjoy an hour-long visit to the cellars.
Guided tours:
Tuesday to Friday at 4.30pm;
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 11.30am.
MARQ Exhibition 'Etruscans: The dawn of Rome'
The museum is home to the largest monographic exhibition on display in Spain with 150 pieces from some of the most important excavations of ancient Etruria. The exhibition, which can be visited until December 12, includes a selection of original pieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Florence (MAF) and the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci in Volterra, one of the oldest in Italy.
Guided tours:
Tuesday to Friday at 12 noon, 1pm, 5pm and 5.30pm.
Saturday at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 5pm and 5.30pm.
Sunday at 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm.
There will aso be dramatised visits: Friday and Saturday at 6pm, and Sunday at 1pm.
Tossal de Manises Lucentum Site
The Tossal de Manises (pictured) is the site of the Roman city of Lucentum, the ancient city of Alicante, located in the Albufereta district. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Valencia region, and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1961.
Guided tours:
Tuesday to Friday at 12pm.
Saturday at 12pm and 4pm.
Sunday at 12pm.
La Illeta dels Banyets Archaeological Site
The site is located in El Campello and is one of the earliest archaeological sites recorded in Alicante where remains from the Bronze Age have been identified.
Guided tours:
Tuesday to Friday at 12pm.
Saturday at 12pm and 4pm.
Sunday at 12pm.
Almudaina Tower
In the heart of the Alicante mountains, Almudaina is home to a unique tower built in the medieval Islamic period. The construction formed part of the fortified enclosure of the small existing farmhouse.
Guided tours:
Tuesday to Friday at 11.30am.
Saturdays at 11.30am and 4.30pm.
Sunday and public holidays at 11.30am.
The Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos Site
Located in the municipality of Castell de Castells, the Pla de Petracos (above) is one of the best rock art sites in the Valencia region. It was a sanctuary of Macro-schematic Art, and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and World Heritage Site.
The Interpretation Centre can be visited Monday to Saturday, between 11am and 1pm and from 5pm to 6pm. Visits must be booked in advance by calling 965 518 067.
La Cova de l'Or archaeological site
The Cova de l'Or in Beniarrés is located 675 metres above sea level on the southern slope of the Sierra del Benicadell and contains an archaeological site dating back to the final stage of the Stone Age, known as the Neolithic period.
Guided tours:
Saturdays from 9am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm.
