Half of Spain on high alert for scorching temperatures: weather forecast June 26-29
24 provinces across 9 regions of Spain have been issued with weather warnings for temperatures that could reach the mid-40s
After an absolute scorcher of a weekend there is to be no let up in the coming days as the anticyclonic weather continues, bringing us the first true heatwave of the year. The week will get off to a roasting start and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has placed 24 provinces in nine autonomous communities on alert for extreme heat.
Most of the country will swelter in the mid-30s but large parts of Andalucia are under a red weather warning and the mercury could tip the scales at an incredible 44ºC in the likes of Cordoba and Seville. It’s the nights that will cause the most discomfort though, since the thermometers are unlikely to dip below 20ºC, resulting in another succession of sleepless, tropical evenings.
The next few days will begin rather hazy in large parts of the country as smoke from wildfires raging through Quebec in Canada reaches Western Europe, although this is expected to remain at high altitudes and so shouldn't impact the air quality.

On Monday June 26, the temperatures will actually fall in northern and eastern Spain and rise everywhere else, with the south of the country forecast to hover around 37 or 38ºC, while most of the extreme southwest could see values as high as 40ºC.
Many places have been issued with an orange and red alert for the first time this year and in these areas, the new law will come into effect limiting strenuous outdoor work.
Cloudy skies and scattered showers are expected in Cantabria and northern Galicia and while the rest of the country will be mostly clear, the cloud cover will build later in the day in the east and the mountains of the southwest, giving rise to some light rain and even the occasional stormy episode.
Red alert for high temperatures: Andalucia.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid.
Yellow alert: Aragón, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday
Alicante: 23ºC; 31ºC
Málaga: 21ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 37ºC
Most of Spain will enjoy another bright and sunny day on Tuesday June 27 with very little chance of rain, although more showers are likely in the eastern Pyrenees and the Canary Islands can expect plenty of cloudy intervals.
The mercury will exceed 34-36ºC in much of the south, even reaching 40ºC in the extreme southwest. Nighttime temperatures won’t drop far below 23 or 24ºC in the Mediterranean.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Aragón, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Extremadura and the Valencian Community.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Tuesday
Alicante: 24ºC; 32ºC
Málaga: 23ºC; 31ºC
Murcia: 21ºC; 37ºC
Maximum temperatures will continue to climb in the Canary Islands on Wednesday June 28, decreasing in the Gulf of Cádiz and northeastern Spain, with few changes in the rest of the country. The day will be mostly clear with no rain on the horizon, with the exception of the eastern Pyrenees where the showers could turn stormy in the afternoon.
In general, the thermometers will remain in the mid-30s in much of the south, creeping up to 38 or 40ºC in the valleys of the southwest, and the minimum temperatures won’t fall below the mid-20s along the Mediterranean coast.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia and Extremadura.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and Madrid.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday
Alicante: 24ºC; 31ºC
Málaga: 23ºC; 32ºC
Murcia: 21ºC; 36ºC
Change is afoot on Thursday June 29 with the arrival of an Atlantic front to the northwest of the country which will leave overcast skies and abundant rain in the north of Galicia and Cantabria. The instability will increase in the rest of Spain too and the cloud cover will grow in large areas of the east as the hours go on, with the added possibility of showers and storms.
While daytime temperatures are expected to drop pretty much across the board the thermometers will still register 34 or 36ºC in the southwest and in the south of the Canary Islands. We’ll also have a bit of a breather on Thursday night as temperatures will fall.
No weather warnings have yet been issued for Thursday.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Thursday
Alicante: 23ºC; 31ºC
Málaga: 23ºC; 31ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 36ºC
