Heatwave comes to an end but temperatures remain sky high: Spain weather forecast July 13-16
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The weekend will be dry and sunny throughout Spain with the temperatures hovering around the mid 30s
It’s been a record-breaking week in much of Spain so far, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 45ºC in large parts of Andalucia and the Region of Murcia. Wednesday July 12 was particularly uncomfortable thanks to a rush of warm air that created a sultry and muggy feel in most of the southeast.
The good news is that the second heatwave of summer 2023 is set to end on Thursday July 13, but the temperatures will still remain very high and the weekend promises to be warm and bright across the country.
“On Thursday, temperatures will drop in the southeast of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, but they will rise in the west. On Friday, there will be a thermal rise in the northern half, while on Saturday they will drop in almost the entire country, except for the eastern end, where they will rise. And on Sunday the opposite will happen,” Aemet meteorologist Ruben del Campo has predicted.
“In other words, although it does not seem that the heatwave thresholds will be exceeded in the second half of the week, we will continue talking about high temperatures of intense heat in a good part of the country, especially the south and east of the mainland,” he added.
Clear skies will prevail in almost the entire country on Thursday July 13 with only a weak drizzle hitting the Cantabrian area, where it will be overcast until late in the afternoon. The Mediterranean area will also benefit from a little cloud cover although this will be mixed with plenty of sunny spells.
The haze which has been hanging over much of the country all week will clear on the mainland but calimas are still probable in the Canary and Balearic islands on Thursday.
Night-time temperatures will continue to increase on the archipelagos but will take a welcome dip in the southeast, the Pyrenees and Galicia. During the day, though, the mercury will creep up in western Spain and the Canary Islands.
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Castilla-La Mancha and Ceuta
As we move into Friday July 14 the thermometers will take a noticeable nosedive in the Canary Islands, the extreme southwest and southern Catalonia and Galicia but the temperatures will begin to creep up again everywhere else, reaching a baking 37ºC in Seville. In fact, with the exception of the northwest of Spain, every region is expected to hover around the mid 30s.
Friday should be another largely clear day although the approach of an Atlantic front will leave cloudy skies and occasional showers in Galicia, which could spread to inland areas of southern Andalucia, Catalonia and the southeast of the country.
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Navarra.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Aragón, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid, Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.
Temperatures will continue to rise in the east of Spain and the rest of the Mediterranean on Saturday July 15 although most of the country will enjoy a little reprieve, especially in the Canary Islands where the thermometers will drop by several degrees. Nevertheless, it will easily exceed 35ºC in much of the southeast at the height of the day.
Low morning clouds along the coasts will clear in the afternoon but another dry storm is possible in the southeast, where the occasional shower could also be found in the evening.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Aragón, Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Looking ahead to Sunday July 16, the temperatures will take yet another upswing along the Atlantic coast while dropping, at last, in the northeast and eastern Mediterranean. The mercury will push past 35ºC in a large part of south and southeastern Spain, climbing as high as 38ºC in Andalucia and Castilla-La Mancha.
Overall another stable day with very little rain forecast, although high calimas are expected in the extreme southeast and the Balearic Islands.
