Heatwave set to peak early this week: Spain weather forecast July 10-13
Most of Spain is on high alert for extremely high temperatures this Monday and Tuesday
A blast of warm air from north Africa ramped up the temperatures across Spain this past weekend but according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), we haven’t seen anything yet. Monday and Tuesday promise to be the hottest days so far this year, with the thermometers set to hit an absolutely sweltering 47ºC in areas of the Guadalquivir.
In addition, Andalucia has been issued the first red weather alert of the summer, for temperatures that signify extreme risk and will imply a stoppage on all outdoor manual work.
The heatwave will be far less noticeable in the northwest of the country, where the daytime highs will be much more bearable.
Intervals of low morning clouds are forecast in Galicia, Cantabria, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands on Monday July 10 but these will clear quickly giving way to a bright day across the country with practically no rain on the horizon.
The exception will be inland areas of eastern Spain, where the cloud cover will deepen towards the afternoon, producing frequent dry storms and even the odd showery episode and gusty winds.
The haze will continue in the extreme south and southeast on a day when the temperatures will rise across the board, exceeding 35ºC in the vast majority of places and touching 40ºC in central areas of southern Spain. A torrid night is also on the cards when the mercury will fail to dip below 25ºC in areas of the Guadalquivir valley and on the coasts of Granada and Almería, and in parts of Mallorca.
Red weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia (yellow alert for stormy episodes).
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Aragón (yellow alert for stormy episodes), Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Region of Murcia, Navarra, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.
There’s to be no let up on Tuesday July 11, particularly at night when the minimum temperatures will increase throughout the country. The mercury will dip ever so slightly at the height of the day along the Atlantic and Cantabrian coasts but will rise elsewhere, easily reaching the 40s in large areas of southern Spain and tipping 44ºC in the Guadalquivir and the central southeast.
Haze is forecast in the Balearic and Canary Islands and southeastern Spain but it will be a mostly clear and sunny day overall, again with the possibility of stormy intervals in inland areas of the east.
Red weather warning for high temperatures: Aragón.
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid Region of Murcia, Navarra and the Valencian Community (yellow alert for stormy episodes).
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Castilla y Leon, Extremadura, and La Rioja.
The stable weather will continue on Wednesday July 12 with a predominance of slightly cloudy skies and no rain in the south and the Balearic Islands. It will be more overcast towards the north and the cloud cover will deepen in eastern Spain as the day goes on.
Probable haze in the Canary Islands, which cannot be ruled out in the southeast of the country and in the Balearic Islands.
Nighttime temperatures will increase in the extreme northwest and southeast of the country and in both archipelagos but decline in the rest of Spain. However, the maximums will continue to rise in the south and the Canary Islands, with much of Andalucia expected to bake in the high 30s and low 40s.
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha and the Region of Murcia.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Aragón, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, the Valencian Community, Ceuta and Melilla.
Few changes are expected on Thursday July 13 when most of the country can look forward to clear sunny skies, although some weak rainfall is forecast in the Bay of Biscay and northern Galicia. Southern Spain could also see some overcast spells throughout the day.
There’s finally some reprieve from the heat, particularly in the southeast, although the mercury will still touch the mid 30s in much of the south and the Canary Islands.
There are currently no weather warnings in place on Thursday.
