High alert for storms and rising temperatures: Spain weather forecast Aug 17-20
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Driving rain and thunder storms will hit the north of Spain while the mercury creeps up in the south
August isn’t quite through dishing out surprises weather-wise it seems. After a scorching start the temperatures mellowed out somewhat, but now the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting violent storms accompanied by driving rain and strong winds in many parts of Spain this weekend.
“The downpours will appear in more areas due to the passage of a wave through the centre and north of the peninsula, so the conditions will be more favourable for the clouds to grow strongly. If the forecasts of our header model are met, various adverse phenomena will occur,” one Spanish meteorologist explained.
The worst of the weather should be confined to the north of Spain and much of the south, including Andalucia and the Region of Murcia, remain on high alert for scorching temperatures all weekend.
Cloud cover will begin to develop across the country early on Thursday August 17 but this will clear in most places as the day goes on, giving way to mostly clear skies. There is a chance of some dry storms and even weak mountain showers inland to the east of Spain and towards the evening, an approaching front will result in dark skies to the extreme northwest of the country.
Daytime temperatures will remain stable for the time being without any major changes.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Aragón, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja.
Most of the country will be clear on Friday August 18 but the arrival of an Atlantic front through the northwest of Spain will bring abundant cloudiness and plenty of showers and bouts of heavy rain, especially in Galicia. These rains could spread to parts of the south and east later in the afternoon.
Daytime temperatures will drop in the Balearic Islands but will remain largely unchanged everywhere else.
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Aragón, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community.
Yellow alert for storms: Galicia.
Northern communities like Galicia and Asturias will continue to battered by storms on Saturday August 19 as the Atlantic front gathers force, and while the stormy intervals should peter out towards the end of the day the showers could spread to other areas further south.
It will be a fairly muggy night across the board with minimum temperatures rising into the mid 20s in most of Spain and the mercury will climb up during the day also, reaching a sweltering 40ºC in the Guadalquivir and other points in western Andalucia and Murcia.
Orange weather warning for high temperatures: Aragón, Catalonia.
Yellow weather warning for high temperatures: Andalucia, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Region of Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Valencian Community.
Yellow alerts for storms: Galicia.
The remains of an Atlantic front will leave cloudy skies with probable weak rainfall in the north of Galicia and Asturias on Sunday August 20, tending to increase the cloudiness also in Cantabria throughout the day, without ruling out the occurrence of some weak and scattered rain.
Stable weather will prevail in the rest of the country with slightly cloudy or mostly clear skies forecast. The daytime temperatures will continue their upward climb, again exceeding 40ºC in the southwest but the temperatures will tip 35ºC in most of Spain.
There are no weather warnings in place for Sunday.
