Holy Week washout in most of Spain: weather forecast March 25-28
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Many regions of Spain can expect a drastic drop in temperatures and a wet and windy Easter
The pleasant, spring-like weather currently being enjoyed across Spain is set to come to an abrupt end just as the country prepares to take to the streets to enjoy a variety of Easter processions and open-air concerts and events. According to the State Meteorological Agency’s (Aemet) latest forecast, a sudden change in weather is expected right from the beginning of the week, with plenty of rain expected in most areas.
"A very marked thermal drop will also arrive, with low temperatures for these dates," a spokesperson said, adding that the arrival of a cold front on Monday March 25 will bring about a dramatic shift in weather patterns. This front will lead to "precipitation and probable very strong gusts of wind," making it necessary for everyone to dust off their umbrellas once again.
On Monday, showers are expected to spread across the entire south and east of the country, as well as the Balearic Islands. As temperatures plummet, it's even possible that snow will fall at elevations of 600 or 700 metres in the northwest of the country.
The only region that won't experience this drastic temperature drop is the Cantabrian area and the upper Ebro. In other parts of the country, however, the thermometer drop "could be locally extraordinary," notes Aemet, with temperature differences of up to 10°C compared to Sunday.
Tuesday March 26 will see rain, cold and snow continuing to dominate the weather landscape, though the intensity of the showers may decrease in some areas, particularly those near the Mediterranean.
Temperatures will keep dropping, with values below what's typical for this time of year, barring the Mediterranean region again. Strong gusts of wind from the west can also be expected.
Several communities, such as Murcia and Valencia, have been issued with weather warnings for extreme winds and dangerous maritime conditions on Tuesday.
Come Wednesday March 27 though, a warmer air mass should sweep across the whole country, ushering in a very welcome rise in temperatures. This trend is set to continue on Thursday March 28, offering a welcome respite from the chill.
Nevertheless, Galicia and Andalucía remain under an orange alert for rough seas, while several other provinces are in for very strong gusts.
However, the rain isn't going anywhere just yet. An atmospheric river is predicted to hit the Atlantic slope later in the week, bringing abundant rain to regions like Galicia, Extremadura, western Andalucía and Castilla y León.
Starting on Good Friday, this unstable front will migrate westward, taking the rain with it and sparing the Mediterranean coast and Balearic Islands.
