ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Both the cumulative incidence rate and new infections continue to skyrocket in Spain
With the festive season fast approaching, fears are growing in Spain as the coronavirus pandemic refuses to release its grip. The last full week in November has begun with a sharp increase in both the cumulative incidence rate and new infections, with the government refusing to make a definitive decision on Covid passports, booster jabs or vaccinations for youngsters.
Cumulative incidence rate
On Monday November 22, the 14-day incidence rate shot up by 21 points to 132 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. While the figure has been consistently rising over the past number of weeks, before the weekend the rate stood at just 111 cases. The situation is becoming increasingly precarious in the autonomous community of Navarra, where an incidence of 373 infections has been registered, while the numbers in Ceuta (59.38) and Extremadura (62.50) have experienced a welcome dip.
In Andalucía, the cumulative incidence rate remains well under the national average, at 70 cases per 100,000 residents, while the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community are neck and neck with 133 cases.
Those aged 11 and under, who are not yet being vaccinated against Covid, continue to have by far the highest incidence, at 203.57, while the least affected group is now those between 12 and 19 years old.
Covid infections
According to the Ministry of Health in Spain, a further 15,875 coronavirus infections have been logged since Friday, of which 1,987 have been reported in the last 24 hours alone.
A staggering 37,521 cases have been detected in the last seven days, bringing the total number of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,096,538.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 2,880 people hospitalised throughout Spain for Covid compared with 2,398 on Friday, which represents a 2.33% occupation rate of hospital beds (up from 1.93%). In addition, 522 people are now being treated in the country’s ICUs, bringing the occupancy past the WHO’s ‘control’ threshold to 5.02%.
By autonomous community, Aragon is experiencing the most hospital pressure with 10.91 points. On the other end of the scale, Andalucía is keeping crisis at bay with an occupancy of just 2.44%.
Fatalities
The Covid death toll has increased by 22 since Friday, with 71 fatalities reported throughout the country in the last week. Andalusia and the Valencian Community are in the lead, with 9 deaths each. They are followed by Castilla y León, with 8.
A total of 87,832 people have lost their lives since the pandemic began.
Vaccination data
As of Monday, 37,547,526 people had received both coronavirus vaccinations, representing 89.1% of the target population. In addition, 90.8% (38,237,469 people) have had the first dose.
