Around 2,000 people have now been evacuated from their homes as the Vall d'Ebro forest fire continues to advance in several directions. The blaze broke out after a lightening strike reportedly ignited the forest.

In the worst wildfire to hit Alicante province in a decade, the blaze has destroyed more than 7,000 hectares having now ripped through the whole of the El Comtat region, forcing the evacuation of more towns, including Fageca and Famorca, as well as the village of Margarida in the municipality of Planes.

Just before 5.30pm on Monday, the Mayor of Fageca, Ismael Vidal, informed residents via the municipal whatsapp account of the urgent need to leave their homes.

He told them to take only the most essential items and take the CV-720 out of the village. The message also informed locals that the neighbouring town of Famorca, two kilometres away, was being evacuated. Both municipalities have only 160 registered inhabitants, but in the summer this figure triples due to a large number of holidaymakers.

Due to the progress of the fire in the last 24 hours, the Emergency services have ordered the evacuation of another five towns: Tollos, Beniaia, Fageca, Vall d'Alcalà and Famorca. The evacuations are being conducted "in an orderly manner" with a meeting point in the town of Muro de Alcoi, where the Red Cross has set up camp in a sports centre.

This means almost a dozen villages have now been evacuated, and the situation is not likely to improve in the short term, threatening to reach the village of Forna (l'Atzúbia municipality) with flames already making headway in Villalonga, La Safor.

Neighbouring regions are sending in resources to help and on Monday afternoon, president of Murica Region, Fernando López Miras, contacted the Generalitat Valenciana and the Alicante Provincial Council to offer "necessary means" to help extinguish the mammoth fire.

"Solidarity between territories to fight the fire together," he posted on his Twitter profile.

A helicopter left the Sierra de La Pila forestry base around 3pm along with a dozen troops from land and air units in the Region.
