Spain can expect “a rigorous winter environment” this coming weekend

The remaining days of January are set to be bitterly cold throughout Spain with most regions barely hitting 10ºC over the weekend. The polar air that has resulted in plummeting temperatures in much of the north and central Spain will begin to move towards the east on Thursday January 26.

The snow level will fall to just 300 metres in Catalonia and the Valencian Community, which this week registered its coldest day since 2021, will likely be blanketed once again. Even the usually mild Balearic Islands could experience some coastal snowfall as frigid northerly winds intensify the frost across the country.

The arrival of these northerly winds loaded with humidity will leave rain and snowfall in the north of Galicia, in the Cantabrian communities and the Pyrenees, which could spread as the day goes on to Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León, Madrid, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha.

Thermometers will drop to an incredible -13ºC in Huesca and to -11ºC in Granada, and along the Mediterranean coast the mercury will remain in the low teens throughout the day.

Friday January 27 will be largely overcast and it will rain heavily in the Bay of Biscay, as well as in southern Andalucia and the Balearic Islands. Some showers are also possible in the Mediterranean.

The snow level will increase slightly to 400 metres and Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo has warned that this could make it difficult to get around in cities like Vitoria and Pamploma, and even the north of Mallorca.

The snowfall warning will extend to the northeast of Castilla y León, Navarra and the Catalan Pyrenees, and will remain active over the weekend in the area around the Cantabrian Mountains.

By evening time on Saturday January 28 the anticyclone should return, pushing out the remaining rain and creating a drier outlook for the rest of the weekend.

It will be mostly overcast with widespread frost and morning cloud banks which will clear towards the afternoon. Both day and nighttime temperatures will fall on Saturday, with highs of 13ºC in Alicante and Malaga.

The outlook is largely unchanged for Sunday January 29 with cloudy intervals in the Balearic Islands and the southeastern coasts. Any showers will be light and should subside towards the evening.

The snow level will be around 600/800 meters in the western half of the Cantabrian area and 400/700 metres in the eastern half of the country, although significant accumulations are not expected.

Few changes are expected temperature-wise although the mercury could climb slightly in the south.

"These will be days in which the temperatures, in general, will be between 3 and 5ºC below the normal values for the season, a time that, by the way, is usually the coldest of the year," the spokesman explained, adding that even in the north, the thermometers may be between 5 and 10 degrees below normal values during the central hours of the day.

"A rigorous winter environment, with intense winds in the north and east of the Peninsula, as well as in the Balearic Islands," del Campo concluded.
